It was more than a department store--it was a cultural and aesthetic experience. The Muzak, the fluorescent lighting, the smell of shoes and Circus peanuts and guinea pig cages...the bargains! Especially around Christmastime, Woolworth's was more magical, more fun, than any amusement park or latter-day, souped-up Walmart.
