Woolworth's was a big department store chain
here in the former rubber capital. We still had
our big downtown store open till the late
eighties. i remember It had the beautiful
red/gold lettering. It had a wonderful smell
inside, like gingerbread. The one in summit
mall had less character, but it still was a nice
store. It closed in the 80's too. The one in
magic city plaza in nearby barberton was the
typical strip mall store. I didn' t like that one
that much. But the best one out of them all
was the one in chapel hill mall. It was the last
store to close (1997) It had a lunch counter
and since they never bothered to change the
interior since 1979, going in there was like
stepping back in time. even when chapel hill
mall underwent a major interior change,
Woolworth's didn't change. A second entrance
was added off the new food court (for the
lunch counter perhaps?) I was truly saddened
when woolworth's closed. But sometimes I
can walk by the old food court entrance, and
still a glimpse of the old interior of my favorite
store.

I began my history with FWW in '89 as an asst mgr out of Penn State, in Schenectady #1991. Prospects weren't great but the managers taught me everything I know. My fondest memories were learning the business and legends from the greatest manager they ev

esurrection of the old format but with better buying...I know, pie in the sky. I can't clearly summarize my three years with FWW on this nice man's site so I won't try, but if there are any ex-mgrs or employees from the Albany District (Carl Snaveley's cr

In the 60's Duluth was blessed with 3 Woolworths stores. Downtown there were two about 3 blocks apart, with one on the upper side of Superior St. and the main, bigger store on the lower side. They were the best places for kids and teens to hang out and
ind great bargains. Their lunch counter was simply unsurpassed. The bigger store, and the last to close, had two levels with a kind of grand stair case between the floors. If you couldn't find what you wanted at Woolworths, it wasn't worth having! I was
a loyal shopper until the end. I am profoundly sad that they are gone; however, I felt for years that it was inevitable. They didn't evolve, grow, and adapt as much as the S.S.Kresge Co. did that turned itself into K-Mart, for example.
All we can do is try to patronize the remaining five and dimes as much as possible to help them stay in business. The Ben Franklins, Dollar Stores, etc., are great little stores that deserve our patronage. While they will never replace Woolworths, th
y deserve to survive. Once gone they will be gone forever.
It is a sad commentary that the proud corporate name of the F.W.Woolworth Corp. is no longer with us either. Venator Group? Come on, get real!
Thanks for letting me vent.

I think the people that didnt understand why it was sad that Woolworth's closed sucked. The closing was like someone taking your childhood and throwing it out on the sidewalk. It wasnt just the products that they sold,it was the memories. When I was a ki
in the 80's I used to shop and eat there all the time. My friends and I used to go in there to buy candy. They had a great candy selection. What was nice about Woolworths is that they had a little bit of everything, and you could find things there that yo
couldnt at other stores. The only stores now that remind me of Woolworths are General Dollar and Family Dollar Stores. They carry similar merchandise. There will never be anything that can replace Woolworths. I'm just glad I took pictures of the WoolWor
hs store before it closed. It's sad that future generations wont get to have my childhood experience.

The Woolworth store in our Riverside Plaza was closed along with all the others. It was such a sad thing to see. I couldn't even go to the closing sales.
For many years..my mother worked at the Lunch Counter as a waitress. In later years..we would always stop at the lunch counter for pie and Coffee while out shopping. Then..they removed the counter and it was never the same. Still..I went to Woolworths fo
many things I could not find elsewhere.
As a child (born 1950), I was given $10 each year to buy all of my gifts for others. Between Woolworth and Kress's, I found everything I needed and had money left over.
I have a request...if anyone has a good detailed photo of any Woolworth Store and especially the lunch counter..I would love a copy. I make miniature replicas and would like to do at least a lunch counter if not a full store. I need photos to work from. I
you can help..please email me.

Beginning in 1956, the year before she married my dad, my mother began keeping a daily diary. She always used the DailyAide diary from Woolworth's. As long as I an my siblings can remember, she has used these diaries, keeping a rather mundane account of
our daily family life, sometimes noting nothing more than the household chores she accomplished, other times noting significant events in our collective lives. When we moved to Missouri in 1970, Mom would have her sister, who still lived near Inglewood,
end her a new DailyAide diary each year. Obviously, she now has a whole liabrary of them (and all of her children covet them).
Sadly, after Woolworth's went out of business, she did not know that she could still find one of these diaries for 1997 and she settled for some other diary for that year. My youngest brother found her a 1998 DailyAide by calling a phone number for W
olworth's that was apparently kept for people who still needed something from the store after it was closed. This year, we have had no such luck, as the number my brother called is no longer in service.
These DailyAide diaries are something of a monument in my family. If anyone visiting this site knows whether they can still be found, and quickly, please e-mail me at the address shown.

I currently work at Woolworth's in a small town called Glenrothes in Scotland. Its so sad to hear that Woolworth's in America has ceased trading, however even although the stores over here have changed considerably, the fun continues and we will ensure th
t "Franky's" vision will be kept alive for future generations!

I am sad that Woolworth's left. I worked there for most of my junior year of high school (1993) until it closed. I still keep my name tags and I have the old set of red foam letters that spelled ot "Woolworth" that were on the wall over the exit door and
ANY pictures.

When Woolworth's closed in Fort Collins, it was, of course, the end of an era. No more French dip sandwiches served by Ramona and Jo to the orange booths (I managed to get one of the booths, which I keep in my basement), no more annuals in six-packs on th
sidewalk in spring, no more wandering among exotic housewares in Rachel's basement department. Today, a bookstore (independently-owned, thank goodness) and upscale Austin's American grill occupy the old Woolworth Building on the corner of College and Mou
tain Avenues. Today, I eat grilled portabello mushroom sandwiches in the same space I used to purchase colorful yard goods and greeting cards. I pay for my books right where Jo used to fry the burgers.
Shortly after our Woolworths closed, I began to collect postcards that showed Woolworths stores. My collections numbers nearly 600 cards, my only tangible connection with its former life.

My hobby is the F. W. Woolworth Company. My fondest memories are of the clinking glasses at the lunch counter and the friendly chirping of the parakeets in the pet department. I always chose my seat at the counter carefully -- so as to sit next to the p
e tower. The Woolworth's in Rapid City closed in January 1994; my adopted Woolworth's in Casper, Wyoming closed that same month. It was a very sad time. My wife and I then went on a whirlwind worldwide Woolworthian tour, locating stores by using the to
l-free "find the nearest Woolworth Store" number and then visited stores in Chingford, England; Kansas City, Missouri, Reno & Las Vegas (2), Nevada; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Salt Lake City, Utah; Denver (4), Colorado, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Durango, Col
rado; Globe, Arizona (My all-time favorite!); and Acapulco & Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. We miss our Woolworthian Tour!

I am actively looking for pictures of old woolworth stores, especially the ones with the old long red stripe with gold lettering. I know where some woolworth items are that are still in the old abandoned stores. Would love to chat with anyone interested
in woolworth/woolco
