Katti pulled her legs up around her, the sun was just coming up, another night of no sleep. Lying there looking at herself, small wrist, tiny ankles and legs, she was just skin and bones. Her money was running out, she would have to think of a way to pay the rent. Maybe she could get back into the restaurant. It had been years since she worked. Looking down at her frail body even she didn't think she would make it long standing on her feet carrying heavy plates and trays to the tables. Right now her days existed of hiding all day long, some of the time spent sleeping, and in the late evenings the wee hours of the morning, she would creep out to get a pack of cigarettes. It was like hiding in the dark would keep her away from people and having to face life. Here she was sitting alone in her apartment day in and day out. Something had to change, even her own mind told her this. Katti woke up early Monday morning knowing she was going to have to go and search for some kind of help, perhaps a job, perhaps some kind of local help. There was welfare, or food stamp's. That could keep her eating and alive until she found a job. Yet did she want to be alive, did she feel alive. Sometimes she would lie awake all night planning ways of dying. Katti didn't have the nerve to outright kill herself but perhaps she could starve herself todeath. Nothing but skin and bones now, it wouldn't take all that much time to just whither away to nothing. Looking in the mirror Katti took a good look at herself, she looked like death warmed over, she knew anyone would have a hard time hiring her. They would think she needed some kind of medical help. No, she didn't want anyone probing into her life. Yet instinct told her she had to go on. So out the door she went, onto the street and into the light of day. As she walked down the city street Katti held her head low so as not to see anyone in her passing. Hell, there were plenty of people out there worse off then her. Into company after company she went putting in applications. She thought maybe working in an office building somewhere she would be seeing the least amount of people possible. If Katti tried to seek out a waitress job, she would be facing people everyday of her life and far to many probing eyes. A week passed and nothing, not a phone call not an interview nothing. Looking through the paper that Sunday, Katti spotted a job offer (work at home) hmmm. That would be great, it required some computer skills and a home PC. Well Katti fit the bill, the Pennimim that Joel owned still sat at his desk. Katti was familiar with the basics of it all. What the hell! The next morning Katti picked up the phone and dialed the number in the paper. EARN $1000.00 a month in your spare time. UP TO #5000.00 full time. Waiting as the phone rang on the other end. Three, four rings, then it was answered by a voice animated machine. Following directions, select after select Katti finally hit an area that would record her name phone number and address. Leaving the information. Katti hung up feeling like she had just wasted her time. Picking up the phone again she located the number of Social Services in the Telephone Directory and dialed it. Talking to an intake representative Katti set and appointment for a few days away. At least there would be some emergency Food Stamps coming she thought. Munching on what was left of some stale crackers and a couple cans of soup, Katti had to laugh for the meaning of the cupboards are bare finally meant something to her. Next he would be out picking in trash cans hoping for a bite to eat. Maybe she could sell some of the items in the apartment. She never used them and the apartment was more than she needed anyway. It was way to big for her and way over done. She didn't need the big screen TV, nor the two VCR's or the Computer for that mater, all of them should bring a pretty good price. She had let it go for months now, the apartment was Joel's, The furniture and appliances were what he picked out. She couldn't bare to part with them, yet now nothing seemed to matter, Katti didn't need all this after all soon she would probably be evicted. She hadn't paid rent in over 2 months. The Landlord sent her a 12 days eviction notice. Katti knew she had at least another 45 days after she was server. after the 12 days, the landlord would have to give her a 30 day notice, then take her to court when she ignored that, and another 10 days, then the local sheriff's department would come along and evict her by putting anything left in the apartment out in the street. And what then everyone would come to fight over who would get what. Katti would be homeless and living in the gutter like all the other homeless people out there.
