As many of you may have heard, a cabbie shot and killed an would-be robber who fired first. The story follows. Let's be pro-active and give the cabbie a "thumbs up" by calling his office and supporting his actions as reported in the news.
The cab company, Kora's Radio Taxi, can be reached at 602.352.8481...the directory had no area code, but I imagine if it's not 602, a recording will guide you to the right number.
According to a radio report, a representative of Kora's said that the company has an official "no weapons" policy due to insurance requirements, but estimates that 3-5% of the 200 drivers carry anyway. An unidentified driver interviewed indicated the actual carry rate to be closer to 2 out of 3 drivers. The same radio report indicated that this taxi company averages one assault or robbery per week. With a 1 in 4 chance of being a crime victim while working for this company, we need to support this driver's right to life....

Robber shot, killed by cab driver

Dec. 28, 1999
A man was shot to death this morning after he attempted to rob a Phoenix cab driver and was hit by return fire, police said.
The cab driver, identified by co-workers as Cruz Barra, was unhurt. Police said they are treating the shooting as self-defense but the Maricopa County Attorney's Office will investigate.
The incident began around 7 a.m. when a Kora's Taxi driver picked up a man and a woman at 32nd Street and Thomas Road in Phoenix.
The man and woman directed the cab driver around the city for about 15 minutes before they had him stop at an apartment complex in the 3900 block of East Earll Drive. There, the man pulled a gun on the cab driver and attempted to rob him, Phoenix police Detective Tony Morales said.
The two struggled, and the man fired at the driver, sending a bullet through the left side of his jacket. The driver then grabbed his gun and fired twice at the man, killing him, Morales said.
Police did not release the name of the dead man pending notification of next of kin. They are searching for the woman, who fled on foot.
Four Spanish-speaking cab drivers at the scene of the shooting said through an interpreter, Michael Connor, that they are always on alert and have had to fend off would-be robbers in the past. Connor, a receptionist at Kora's, said that three cab drivers from the company have been robbed in the past three months.
