These results always sound good to the talking monkeys. They wouldn't mind a cavity search or two on their way home from work if it bagged "just one" bad guy. After all...

It's for the children.

DURHAM -- Dozens of motorists were arrested Wednesday in a 10-hour operation that focused on snatching drugs and guns before they entered Durham, and police say they will continue "Aggressive Patrolling" through the holiday weekend.

More than 70 officers and agents from area alcohol and law enforcement offices worked a CHECKPOINT from noon to 10 p.m. Wednesday at Interstate 85 and Glenn School Road. They arrested 44 people on 81 charges, including a fugitive from Washington who was wanted in a break-in and a suspect who was sought in Henderson in connection with a violent crime, according to a statement from the state Department of Crime Control and Public Safety.

The charges included possession of cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and marijuana, and maintaining a motor vehicle for the purpose of selling controlled substances.

There were 23 other controlled-substance charges and 11 charges involving weapons violations.

Nine firearms, which were thrown from cars heading toward the checkpoint, were confiscated. Authorities also seized $3,903 and a vehicle in which drugs were found.

Maj. Dwight Pettiford, a Durham police spokesman, said police plan "aggressive patrolling" over the Christmas weekend, but declined to elaborate on what measures would be taken.

The checkpoint Wednesday was part of "Operation Season's Greetings". The officers and agents were from state Probation and Parole, the state Highway Patrol, Division of Motor Vehicles Enforcement, the National Guard, Alcohol Law Enforcement, Durham police, the Durham Sheriff's Office and Durham County Alcoholic Beverage Control Enforcement.

Authorities had experts on drug-interdiction techniques and specialized drug-detection equipment through the National Guard Drug Interdiction Task Force, the statement said.

It was a collaborative effort to "intercept people bringing drugs, weapons and other illegal items into Durham," according to the statement.
