Under the orders of Congress, the Transactional Record Access Clearinghouse, has been conducting a study of BATF's enforcement of federal gun violations. The study was to find if the Clinton administration had been soft on violent criminals. The BATF was refusing to release information through the Freedom of Information Act, so a suit was filed to get the data, which should be public knowledge. While the suit went on, the court discovered that the BATF was "destroying during a massive shredding" records that would prove poor performance by the BATF during the Clinton administration. The Justice department signed a consent decree, admitting guilt, and finally handed over the requested records. This should be the end, but its not. Some in Congress are now requesting hearings on the matter. Some would like to know why the records were being illegally destroyed, while others are asking about BATF's poor performance with going after cases. This sets the possible stage where the BAFT maybe abolished in 2001. (12/24/99)
