Australian voters reject severing ties with Britain
Dallas Morning News
Monarchists - joined by radical republicans who said the ballot proposal didn't go far enough carried the day. The "no" vote against a republic won about 54.5 percent nationwide and a majority in five of Australia's six states.
But the outcome isn't likely to end Australia's debate over whether to replace the country's 98-year-old constitutional monarchy with a republic, political analysts said.
Political analysts attributed Saturday~s result to the fact that the referendum offered voters only one republic model, in which the president would be chosen by Parliament - not the public.
Republicans say it's a matter of national pride for Australia to formally end ties that go back to its settlement as a British penal colony in 1788. They vowed to continue their efforts to establish a republic.
