This past week spanned the first vote of the primary season where Bush and Gore walked away from Iowa with their leads safely intact and surprisingly strong showings for Steve Forbes and Alan Keyes.

Arrivederci, Iowa: Bush and Gore coast, Keyes has his moment and Hatch looks for an escape. By Jake Tapper http://www.salon.com/politics2000/feature/2000/01/25/results/index.html?CP=SAL&DN=650

America's wake-up call?: Alan Keyes strikes a chord with Iowa voters. By Anthony York http://www.salon.com/politics2000/feature/2000/01/25/keyes/index.html?CP=SAL&DN=650

Iowa's insurgents and Achilles' heels: The Iowa caucuses are more than an election-year side show -- in the past, they've resurrected sinking campaigns and helped catapult obscure candidates like Jimmy Carter to the White House. By Jake Tapper http://www.salon.com/politics2000/feature/2000/01/24/vote/index.html?CP=SAL&DN=650

Bill Bradley's results were disappointing and he scrambled to gain lost ground by attacking Gore for "misleading" statements over the last four months and, especially, Wednesday night's debate.

The machine rages on: GOP and Democratic presidential candidates fire their last salvos in New Hampshire. http://www.salon.com/politics2000/feature/2000/01/27/debate/index.html

Gore, Bradley make pitches in N.H http://www.salon.com/politics2000/feature/2000/01/26/dems_nh/index.html?CP=SAL&DN=650

Gore began the week with positive press covering his transformation from policy wonk to political fighter.

Al the thug: How the media transformed Gore from hapless hack to ruthless pol overnight. http://www.salon.com/politics2000/feature/2000/01/27/gore/index.html?CP=SAL&DN=650

But as the week continued Bradley's new 'liar offensive' shows no sign of abating and may be having a substantial effect on Gore. This despite the fact that Gore has almost drawn even with Bush in national polls.

Bradley gets riled: Finally, Bradley shows his aggressive side and Gore goes on the defensive. http://www.salon.com/politics2000/feature/2000/01/28/bradley/index.html

The GOP contest is squarely in Bush's court. While Bauer and Keyes are gnawing away at Forbes' lead McCain and Bush are dodging huge issues like abortion while trying to talk solely about taxes and character.
