Airfield Information
The following information is unofficial and should not be used as the basis for any piloting decisions. Contact the FAA or other official sources of information for confirmation of details.
CGF has one runway: Runway 6/24.
ILS is available.
Spotting Information
CGF does not have scheduled passenger service. The airfield is primarily used for general aviation, flight instruction, business and courier service.
Most of the aircraft you will see are single-engined private aircraft. There are some business jets based at the field as well. Two air ambulance services also use CGF as their backup base: MetroHealth Medical Center's LifeFlight and University Hospitals Rainbow RapidCare.
Spotting Locations:
Along Richmond Road
This location is at the beginning of Rwy 23 and the end of Rwy 5. You have a better view of the airfield from this location than at any other public space. The tree obstruction is minimal because the trees have been cut down for the glide slope. You can generally see traffic approaching Rwy 23 well ahead of time.
You'll have to park at Eagle's Wings Aviation or at the restaurant on the Airport grounds (will add the name when I remember it) and walk to this location. Do not pull to the side of the road or try to park on the shoulder, as this is a residential area and you'll probably attract police.
Along Bishop Road
This location is at the beginning of Rwy 5 and the end of Rwy 23. The road is below runway level so if the aircraft is landing on Rwy 5 you will not see touchdown or rollout. You also won't see the aircraft until it is in the air and above you if departing Rwy 23.
It is the best place to get belly shots of aircraft taking off on the 23, or to get side shots of aircraft landing on the 5.
The view is obstructed at best. If the aircraft is landing on the 5 heading, you may not see it until it is almost over you, because of trees. Obviously the height of the runway is the obstruction to aircraft on the 23.
You will have to park your car somewhere and walk to this location. There are no "good places" to park. Do not pull to the side of the road or try to park on the shoulder, as this is a residential area and you'll probably attract police.
On a side note -- when you are on Bishop Road, you are actually across the county border in Lake County. There's another airport I know of that is right on the border, too... That's Westchester County Airport in White Plains, NY, which is almost in Connecticut!
