EVERYBODY HAS PEEVES

THESE ARE A FEW OF MINE

I'm not really "peevish" about these things, but they bother me in a small way

Some misunderstood words

"Metaphysics"

Anybody going by my 'front door' while touring the Athens/Oracle neighborhood would notice the sign out front that reads.
Spirituality, Metaphysics and Science, as my interests.
Actually these are some of the interests I have.
A lot of "Orthodox" Christians would hurry by for fear that something 'bad' might come out my door.
If they would bother to check a dictionary they'd understand that the META, in metaphysics, is from the Greek and means,

changed,,
after,
beyond,
higher.

"Physics"
(of Aristotle)

A branch of philosophy that seeks to explain the nature of being and reality.
Secondary meaning of MetaPhysics is speculative philosophy in general.
The spooky or supernatural choice of meaning is in third place.
Maybe because that's a connotation in more recent usage than the original. This happens when people attach a meaning to a word or words that was not intended in the beginning.

"Occult"
(pronounced a-kult)

The dictionary gives the meanings as
hidden,
secret
mysterious
of the mystic arts, such as magic, astrology, etc.

So if you're looking for hidden meanings, why should some other people get up tight?

"Orthodox"

From the Latin and means straight, or proper opinion.
Lots of choices in that, although the word is usually taken to mean "established" religions, or sciences.

"Religion"

Webster says it's from the Latin "religio", a belief and worship of God or gods.
Other sources say it comes from "religare" meaning to 'bind' or 'tie back'.
I don't know and won't comment.

Words can hang you up if you let them, so go for the "feeling."

And then we have the
"Lip lazy" talkers

These are the people who talk without moving lips and at a rapid fire pace.
Unfortunately many of these are "teeners". What will happen when they get out in the world of communicating.
Here are some of the hard to understand "Words?":
"Hyewachatoon" Hi what are you doing?
"Eyegontahmoobycanoohcum." I'm going to the movies, can you come?
"Eyeuhno" I don't know.
Well you get the picture.

It may be that they need a sort of "code" that parents won't understand.
You can get away with a lot that way.
There is a cure though. The older folks can converse in the "Old" Pig-Latin, remember?
that might bewilder the youngsters for a while.
