The Triffo's ancestral home in Bukovina was in the town of Tereblestie, now just north across the border in the Chernivetska Oblast of Ukraine. At least 3 of Kaspar Triffo's children left Bekersdorf, Galicia (now in the Teropilska Oblast of Ukraine), in the late 1700's and became farmers in Tereblestie. One of the these, Anton Triffo, married Dorothea Mueller. They went to Mitoka for some time and then returned to Tereblestie.
One of their children, Johan Triffo married Maria Karolina Woessner and settled in Mitoka. One of their sons, Anton Triffo, born 3-18-1854, married Magdalena Mohr, had several children, and then migrated to America in the early 1900's.
Another of Anton & Dorothea's children, Valentin Triffo married Maria Hoszowski. They stayed in Tereblestie and two of their children, Karl and Christian, are the beginnings of the two Canadian branches of the Triffo family.
Anton Triffo came to America with his sons and daughters from Bukovina. They sailed off on June 27, 1912, from Rotterdam on board the steamship S.S. Volturno, part of the 371 adults and 41 children seeking a new life that day. They arrived at Halifax on July 8, 1912 at 8:30 in the morning. By nightfall, they were on board a train headed for the United States.
The village formerly called Mitoka Dragomirna, now known as Mitocul Dragomirnei in the province of Suceava, was home to the branch of the Triffo family that came to America. Part way up the Carpathian Mountains on the road to Transylvania, this small village of farmers was our ancestral home.
Mitocul Dragomirnei can be found on the small back roads near Suceava, Romania. Within the old Roman Catholic parish of Suczawa, the village sports a current population of around 3,000 people. On the map, below, the red star shows it's relative location.
In 1787, Casper Trifon (=Drivvo) and his family of 8(?), received land in Beckersdorf, Galicia. He came from Forbach, a city currently in Lorraine, France (Alsace Lorraine), then in Lothringen. He is the ancestor of Anton Triffo. As more information is discovered, it will be posted here.
