Burg Katz was built by the Counts of Katzenelnbogen. The counts needed a fortified place to set up a toll boudry line at Loreli. They built the castle downstream from the rock of Loreli so that they could maintain the Hessian properties. He needed to maintain them against his neighbor the Electorate of Trier. The Electorate was jealous of the Katzenelnbogens for having so many toll stations. Burg Katz was a strong castle it wtihheld the French onslaught in 1692, but in 1806 the french returned and destroyed Burg Katz with powerful explosives. Before the castle was destroyed the Hessians used it as a base of operations for troops. Burg Katz was rebuilt from 1896 to 1898 and is now a vacation home.
