Notes from classmates ...
Linda Drake:  I think that is Sandy Holman to the left of Harriet Hawkins on the back row.  She didn't finish with us.  My third grade teacher was Mrs. Matthews on the second floor of P.W. Payne School.  I had Mrs. Welliver in first grade.  That 3rd grade teacher in the picture, I believe, is Mrs. Marlin.  And I would question if that is Ardella in the front row next to Margaret.  Good luck!

Monty:  I think I recognized one boy -- Ted Houchin?  I think he is the 4th from the left on the 2nd row.

Sue Miller Lorenz:  My third grade teacher was Mrs Matthews.

Ted Anderson:  Mrs. Mathews is CORRECT for my 3rd grade too. After looking more closely at the teacher, I think it IS Mrs. Marlin.  It makes me have some doubt about whether that is Bill then in the picture. Back to Ardella:  Why don't we ask HER?  Linda and Sue - do you guys remember them building the addition to Payne while we were in Mrs. Mathews' class?  It was right outside our window (am I finally officially going crazy?).

Joe Wales:  OOOOOOOO, this is GREATTTTTTT, to have this going and I did not come to Payne School until the 3rd grade and Mrs. Martin was my teacher.

Libby Guerrero:  My 3rd grade teacher at South Side was Mrs. Limebach (not sure about the spelling).  So we must be talking about 2 different schools.  I remember her well because in all those years she is the only one I didn’t like.

Judy Fowler:  To throw another school into the mix, my third grade teacher was Mrs. Dinn at Needham Elementary. That was the year we learned to write with ink.

Linda (Castner) Hicks:  The Third Grade picture is of  Mrs. Marlin. Her son, Bill, was in our class, and they lived around the corner from me. I took piano lessons from her until they moved to New York. I also have that picture and have the names of most of us. I will get it out and take a look to see what I can find out. Love you all.

Billy Ruth Fitzpatrick:  Just checked out the website.  Wow, it is so neat.  I really enjoyed the DYRT and American Pie.  Always did wonder exactly what inspired that song. I knew most of the faces in the picture that were identified.  The one little guy on the bottom kind of looks like Rex Petro, was he in our class? I have a picture of Miss Joseph's first grade class somewhere. You are doing such a terrific job with the website, thanks so much!

Mike Perry:  There must have been 2 third grade classes. who has the other picture?

Mike Perry:  When you say South Side is that the location of the Masonic Home? I attended Alva Neal and I think my teacher was Mrs. Weliver. So there must have been 2 classes at Alva Neal and 1 at South Side.

Olivia:  Yes, Mike.  The Masonic Home School – it was called by both names.  I was really sorry to see it torn down some years ago.  I lived on that side of town and it was very close to my home.  It’s funny how every place seemed so far away then and now it seems so much smaller.

Ted Anderson:  Perry, you're as screwed up as me!  I said I thought Mrs. Weliver was my 3rd grade teacher, but was quickly corrected (as you are now!) and told that she was our 1st grade teacher, not 3rd.  We have pieced together so far that there were at least 3 3rd grade classes - Limeback at South (and yes, South Side WAS the Masonic Home (it was always Holloway Hall to those of us who never went to school there), Marlin (Bill's mom), and Mathews.  The latter two were at Payne.  Mrs. Marlin's class is the picture on the website.  Actually, the last time I looked Judy had two pictures of the class, the second of which includes names (as best we can remember).  We keep hearing from more and more of you guys - keep up the good work!!  Ironically, I ran into Jack Purdy at Walmart today, and was talking to him about the picture.  He doesn't have a computer these days, but told me he went to South Side, mentioning Davy Poe, Arnie Parkhurst and Olivia as being in his class.  Good to hear from you, Mikey!!!

Kathy Andrews:  I have had so much fun reading all comments regarding the third grade picture. I have been trying to find the picture of Bill's third grade class, Bill didn't know any of the kid's names, not surprising, I still have to remind him of my name.  I found his report card from the third grade (not real pretty), but he went to the Masonic Home, and his teacher name was Mrs Mabel Leimbach.  I will keep looking for the picture and forward it.  Kathy (Bill's better half).

Olivia Guerro:  Kathy, Bill and I were in that class together.  Good old Mrs Leimbach – as I said before, the only grade school teacher I didn’t like.  Does Bill remember Mrs. Roush, Mrs Blake, and the principal whose name I can’t remember?

Susan Bright Maguire:  This conversation is interesting!  I went to Payne School and Mrs. Matthews was my third grade teacher.  What picture are you all talking about?  Is there a way for me to see it?  Ted and Mike weren't you also at Payne?  Hi to all FHS friends ... Susan

Wayne Collins:  We have heard from Wayne Collins, who mentions a Mrs. Hicks's 3rd grade class at Payne.  Does anyone out there have information on her, or remember if Wayne was in your class?

Judy Fowler:  A little geography lesson:  I'm not sure everyone realizes it, but there was life out there besides the schools in town -- Hopewell was on the west side of town and Needham was on the east side. I guess we were all one big class -- only in different buildings! We all didn't get together until 9th grade when we started high school. Does anyone have a picture of Hopewell's third grade? Or, Needham's third grade? The only Needham Grade School  picture that I have is one taken in the sixth grade, and Mrs. Garlock was our teacher.

Johanna Schmidt:  Ted, I just went to the website and see all the updated names in the picture. There is one name Karl and no last name. My brother’s name is Karl Schmidt. I need to know what year this picture was taken. My brother and I came to this country in December 1953.  We started in Payne school January 1954 and we were placed in the 4th grade. Once the names were identified by Linda  one can see the resemblance in the pictures and bring back memories.   It’s nice to see a new surprise every day! Looks like we all are on the computer daily to see what’s new.   Hello to everyone out there,  Johanna

Ted's Response:  Hi Johanna!  We are keeping track of all of the ways this story is affecting the class!  It is good to hear from you.  I remember early on when you and Karl came to Franklin.  I remember your Dad too.  He came to our house and helped Dad re-shingle the roof on the garage.  He (as you know, but for the benefit of our classmates) worked at Arvins with my Dad and they became friends.  I'm thinking he was a welder, and I seem to remember he wore a welder's hat when he was at our house.  I thought Karl was a year younger than you and I, which would have put him in my brother Jack's class -- but you say you both started in the fourth grade, huh?  The picture is definitely when we were in the 3rd grade, which would have been school year ????  My math is letting me down.  1953/54?  (Wouldn't it be between fall of 1952 and summer 1953, guys? - Judy).  If you started at Payne in Jan of '53 (I think Johanna said they started in 1954, Ted - judy)  in the fourth grade, who was in the class with you?  And who was your teacher?  I'm almost positive that we (our class) went over to the high school for our fourth grade.  I'm thinking we have awakened a giant with all these questions and memories, and I bet we can come up with whether or not that's Karl in the picture.  I've looked at it since your email, and have to say that I don't think it's him (but I've already proved that my memory is far from perfect!!  I thought John Goldsmith was Tom Sellers in the pic - so what in the world do I know??)  Keep checking the website, and we'll come up with who-knows-what!!!!!

OK, Johanna - I've slept on your question about the year the class picture was taken.  Plus, I emailed your question to Judy and Sharon (in the night, I realized that neither of them went to Payne, so they were not going to be too familiar with what was going on).  SO, I have taken the bull by the horn and here's what I have come up with!!  The picture was taken during the school year Sept 1951 to June 1952.  Period.  That's when it was taken. That means that you and Karl were not here yet.  Your statement of coming to Payne in January of 1954, and being placed in the 4th grade has got me thinking of something else.  I have been under the assumption that after 3rd grade, our class went to the Hurricane Street school (our high school building).  Now, after your email, I'm beginning to think we didn't go over there until 5th grade.  That would make more sense (not that anything I say makes much sense! ha!).  I think Mrs. Fulmer was my fourth grade teacher.  Does that sound right?  There were probably two fourth grade classes at Payne, and I don't know who would have taught the other class.  We'll have to ask some of the folks who were there with us.  But I'm tempted to let the 3rd grade hub-bub die down before working everybody up over the 4th grade!  ha!  Anyway, to answer you original question, Johanna, looks like you weren't here yet in the pic on the web.  Keep in touch, and let me know if you remember more about teachers or classmates!  Thanks for joining the fun!

Sharon Williams:  Oh my Joe Wales has stirred up our class and it has been wonderful.  It all started with the picture Joe sent to Ted Brewer.  The picture has been posted to our website with almost all of the names completed. Linda Hicks had almost all of the names on the back of her picture and others have offered help as well.  This class was taught by Mrs. Marlin.

In the meantime we have discovered there were three 3rd grade classes total at Payne.  Wayne Collins mentioned Mrs. Hicks 3rd grade class at Payne.  Do any of you have a picture of her class.  Does anyone remember who taught the third 3rd grade class and are there any pictures of that class?

Now with all of this rumbling another pictures has emerged of Needham School, it has also been posted on our website with most members named. Please keep your comments coming.

Harriett Hawkins Beeler:  Just checked out the picture.  In row one, #9 is Betty Thomas and in row two #16 is ______McCorkle.

Billy Ruth:  Becky (her very cool mule) is staying very warm thanks, she has a really thick coat and the cold doesn't seem to bother her.  She has been coming out even in the coldest weather and eating grass through the snow.  I think I would stay in the barn!  http://geocities.com/robbinsroost/billieruth.html  I'm pretty sure the photo I have is  Miss Joseph's class but I may have some kindergarten pictures too.  I went to Payne through 4th grade I believe because I was in the 5th grade band over at the old high school.  (Ted: this is a good clue that you were in the high school bldg. in 5th grade.)

Ted Anderson:  So there WAS a third 3rd grade class at Payne!  I thought "Tennessee" Collins was losing it!  He never did respond to me.  I think my 3rd grade teacher was Mrs. Weliver (or something like that!).  We sat in the classroom and watched them build the addition that was to be our stage and gym floor.  I don't recognize the teacher in the pic, but most of the kids are familiar.  I don't  have a picture, at least that I know of.  Hope this info helps!

Olivia:   Is this the same Mrs. Matthews that later taught at the high school?

On to Payne Picture #2
