In 1790 Spencer Gill, Sr. lived and paid taxes in the tidewater area of Virginia, between Mount Vernon and Jamestown, where they harvested oysters and grew tobacco. Passed Away Of Cancer Of The Face, WAS HELD IN HIGH ESTEEM
Thomas Douglas (sic. Dudley) Gill, age 77 years, one of the most prominent residents of the vicinity of Bengal, passed away this morning of cancer of the face, from which he had been suffering for the past twenty-three years. The deceased was born in Ripley County and when very young moved to his present residence in Jackson (sic Hendricks) Township. At the age of seventeen he was united in marriage with Miss Theoby (sic. Phoebe) Tucker, who survives him. They lived together as husband and wife for over sixty years. This union was blessed with six children, five of whom survive, namely, David Gill, of north of Bengal; James, William, Misses Mollie and Emma, all at home. He had been affiliated with the Bengal Christian church for a number of years and was always one of the leading workers in church, and his death removes one of the most highly esteemed residents of that part of the county. -- Funeral services and arrangements will be announced later through Stewart & Fix.

Mrs. Phoebe Gill Passed Away At Her Home In Hendricks Township Today
FUNERAL SERVICE THURSDAY
Mrs. Phoebe Gill, age seventy-nine years, widow of Thomas D. Gill, died Tuesday morning at 7:45 o'clock, at her home in Hendricks Township. Her death was caused by a complication of diseases, with which she had suffered for several weeks. Her condition had been critical for about two weeks.
Mrs. Gill was a daughter of James C. and Mary Tucker. She was born November 28, 1842, on a farm in Hendricks Township, near the place on which she died. All of her life had been spent in Shelby County, with the exception of one year, during which she resided in Fulton County. For fifty-five years she had lived on the farm on which her death occurred. Mrs. Gill was a member of the Christian Church at Bengal.
She was married to Mr. Gill September 12, 1861. His death occurred March 24, 1919 (sic-1920). She is survived by two sons, William F. Gill, at home, and David E. Gill, of Needham Township, Johnson County; two daughters, Misses Emma L. and Mary E. Gill, at home; and two brothers, E. V. Tucker, of Missouri, and George Tucker, of Anderson. Nine grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at two o'clock at the Second Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, the Rev. Bennett, pastor of the Christian Church at Bengal, officiating. Burial will be made in the Sec. Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Stewart & Fix in charge.

DAVID E. GILL RITES FRIDAY, County Native Dies At Daughter's Home
Funeral rites will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. for David Edward (sic Elijah) Gill, 90, native of Shelby county and oldest member of the Second Mt. Pleasant Baptist church. The services will be held at the church and burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Vandivier Brothers Mortuary, 951 N. Main St., in Franklin. Mr. Gill, who formerly resided in Needham township, Johnson county, died Tuesday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Jacob Doty, near Greenwood. He was born July 25, 1865, the son of Thomas and Phoebe (Tucker) Gill. He was married to Anna Cowen who preceded in death with seven of 13 children born to the union. The six children surviving with Mrs. Doty, are Ray Gill of Needham; Vonnie of Indianapolis; Claytor of Kokomo; Mrs. Donald Elkins of Jackson, Michigan, and Mrs. Lyman Stonephifer. There are 28 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Gill, a resident of Needham township, died 12:10 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the home of Jacob Doty, north of Bargersville, where he has been residing for the past five years.[ His funeral was at Vandiver Brothers Mortuary, 351 N. Main St., Franklin. Burial was at Second Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Needham Twp. Johnson Co. IN]."
The Doty household held a family of redheads and was a busy home with several relatives coming and going constantly. Many family get-togethers were held around the kitchen table and in the big yard surrounding the two-story stone farmhouse in which they lived. At one particular gathering, our family posed for a picture to show five generations together, that is, four, four because Garry Gill, David Elijah's son, preceded him in death in 1947. A photo taken in 1955 shown in these pages includes David Elijah, Elma Mae Gill Fowler, Nola Pearl Fowler (Stoehr) Burge, and her son Stephen Robert Stoehr.

Early on in this genealogy, we referred to Annie R. Cowan as Lucy Ann Cowan. We now believe Annie name was not Lucy, as was recorded in previous versions of this family tree. Her marriage record spells her name Annie Cowen. However it is spelled, she was a real and human person -- the likes of whom are unique among the mothers of mankind. Born in 1871 in Smithland, Indiana, of pioneer stock, Anna birthed 13 babies on land which just decades before was called the Indiana Territory. She is remembered by granddaughters as a woman who grew her own long green tobacco, smoked a stone pipe, and danced on the kitchen table, while her man, David Elijah Gill, played the fiddle. She loved nothing better than to quilt and quilted everything she could get her hands on. Her cooking fires burned constant and diligently while she cooked vegetables her garden grew and meat from the late 18th century sources -- home killed and cured and that from the wild things. Is it any wonder that in a her later years, she left her gravy pan to harden until the crust popped off then wiped it out? Is it any wonder that she refused to belly up to another sink of dirty dishes until someone came to wash them? Is it any wonder her grandchildren can remember their grandpa saying, "Annie! Get out of that bed!," when they came to visit in her latter years?
Nine sons, she had, and four daughters -- thirteen children to birth, nurse, feed, cloth, teach and doctor. Some 300 descendents later, we are touching on her story. Surrounded by her family, she sat strong and proud before the camera on Easter Sunday, in 1925. She would pass into the ages 10 years later at age 64.
Andrew Johnson was president when she was born and the period in America's history was called the Reconstruction -- rebuilding from the Civil War. That was the year Mrs. O'Leary's cow was to have kicked over a kerosene lamp to start the Chicago Fire and P.T. Barnum opened his famous circus, the "Greatest Show on Earth" in Brooklyn, New York.

The family took David's Christmas a little early and they didn't any more than get home until they had a call that David died of pneumonia. David was born when Anna was 51 when David Loren was born. Too old -- he was born with Down Syndrome (people used to call babies with this condition "mongaloid's." Jim Gill remembers that "after Grandma died Grandpa milked at midnight after he and David Loren came home from the store in Needham -- either Shorty Long's or Stub Etchison'sss store. Stub was a brother to Sketch Etchison." Stub and Sketch -- great names! Actually, Needham was home base for the Gill family during the early decades of 1900.

Jim Gill remembers that Garry got a Karmen Deering tractor. When he said Whoa! it didn't and he let it run out of gas and never drove it again. David drive it from then on. But, the main horsepower around the farm was horse power. Garry always kept a lot of horses. There were 10 or 12 most of the time. They were stabled in a horse barn, where the horses were kept in stalls on either side of the walkthrough.
Garry Estel Gill was a farmer. After his wife Pearl died, he married Cora (unknown last name). He was living in Nineveh at the time of his death. His body was prepared at Flinn Maguire funeral home then taken to the home of Mrs. J.D. Fowler, his daughter. This writer was only four years old then. His casket was in a west bedroom of the house. I was scared to go in there and for years would not go into a funeral home with my parents to see a dead person. His obit:

NINEVEH, July 28--Funeral services were held in the Sec. Mt. Pleasant Baptist church Sat. afternoon at 2:30 o'clock for Garry Gill. Rites were in charge of the Rev. L. Paul Bowling, church pastor, with interment following in the church cemetery. The casket was carried by Max Gene Gill, Warren Edward Doty, Kenneth Gill, Dale Robbins, Robert Asher and Wayne Gill. Flowers were in charge of by Judy Asher, Marilyn Asher, Donna Elkins, Nellie Mann, Mary Nell Hazelwood, Jeannette Doty, Velva Ann Asher, Esther Stewart, Betty Doty and Beth Gill. Mr. Gill died in a Nineveh store Thurs. morning at 11 o'clock where he had gone to make a purchase, and suffered a heart attack. The preceding Tuesday he had celebrated his 54th birthday. He had been a farmer all his life. He is survived by the widow, nine children, the father (David Elijah Gill living north of Needham where the deceased had lived for some time), four brothers and three sisters. -- Note: Garry's first wife was Edna Pearl Tucker. She preceded him in death in 1944. The couple were the parents of twelve children, nine surviving.
A second obit adds this: Survivors: Mrs. Elma Mae Fowler, David Henry Gill, Mrs. Louise Mann, Paul Gill, Mrs. Fern Pevler, James Gill, Ivan Gill, Patricia Gill and Jack Gill. Mr. Gill was born in Shelby County, July 15, 1893, the son of David and Anna Gill. He had lived in the Mt. Carmel area of Nineveh Twp. for one year. Mr. Gill is a member of the Second Mt. Pleasant Baptist church. Four brothers and sisters survive him: Harry Gill, Vonnie Gill, Clater Gill, Ray Gill, Leota Doty, Freida Stonecypher, Eva Elkins.

Pearl lived in Clark Twp. with her parents, Henry Tucker and Alice Bell Mason. They attended the 7th Day Advent Church. They lived on the Chester DeVore place on the Whiteland Road. Her mother died when she was three. Elma Mae, her daughter, was born while Garry and Pearl lived in the small DeVore house on the same farms.
Daughter Patricia Gill was 8 or 9 when her mother died. She remembers that her mother was sick a lot of the time. Her mother was only 45 when she died from heart disease.

Elma Mae Fowler was born on June 6, 1914, the daughter of Garry Estel Gill and Edna Pearl Tucker. They lived on the Chester Devore farm on the Whiteland Road in Johnson Co. IN. The president that year was WOODROW WILSON. By the time she was six, they lived in a little house on the Johnson-Shelby Co. line in Johnson Co., and when she was eight, they moved to Urmeyville. She first went to school at Urmeyville, where she had to walk a mile to get to school. Then, when Needham School was built on the Upper Shelbyville Road, ie. School 4, she rode the bus to attend school.
When she was 10, they moved to Shelby County to a house near Sec. Mt. Pleasant Church, where she lived until she was 15 years old.
"I never learned to play, because I was the oldest and had to take care of them while Mom did other things -- she worked with Dad in the field a lot. I had to watch the kids -- all I did was baby-sit. The kids used to call me "little mom" Ñ because I didnít have time to play. I had to take care of them. By that time, we lived over by the Second Mount Pleasant church.
"I went to school at Hendricks Township school. I had the smallpox while I was there. One day, I went home and told Mom I had sores on me and the kids wouldnít let me drink out of their cups. I needed something to drink water out of, so Mom brought me a collapsible cup made out of metal. It was a small disk. I had me a drinking cup, then.
"I went to school there from the 6th grade to the 8th grade. When I was in the 8th grade, we had a school festival, and I was voted the most popular girl in school. Boy, that sure went to my head. I was only 14 years old. Boy that was something! I was really getting somewhere. Then I started having dates when I was about 15.
"I had lots of boyfriends, but never was crazy about any of them. When I was about 16 one boy wanted to get married. I decided that was for the birds, and I decided I didnít like him very well. He said, ñWell if you donít marry me, Iím going to get someone else who will.Ñ I said, ñGo ahead and do it.Ñ He did and said, ñI told you I was going to get married.Ñ I said, ñIím glad, I didnít want to marry you anyway.Ñ
"J.D. used to come to see me every Saturday and Sunday night. He usually spent the entire day with us on Sunday and ate supper with us on Wednesday. One time he came on a Wednesday night, and we fell asleep on the sofa. Dad was reading a book, as usual, and got up and went to bed and left us asleep. We didnít wake up until daylight the next day. They liked to teased him to death about that -- he stayed all night! " -- Mae Fowler
When she was 18, Mae married J.D. Fowler on July 27, 1932. They eloped from a Thrasher's Picnic in Franklin and drove to Columbus to get married. They couldn't afford to set up housekeeping so they kept the marriage a secret until December 23, when they finally produced the marriage license. After that, they moved in with Barney Vaught, for whom J.D. worked, and lived there for a full year.

Born: Livingston County, Kentucky, May 31, 1912. Parents: Alex Fowler and Mary DeNola (Nolie) Norman. That year, the Titanic struck an iceberg and the president was WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT. He moved to Union Co., KY, in 1920 with his parents, where he started school in Phipps School near Waverly, KY. He went to Phipps for two years, then went to Boxville School through the grades. He had begun his first year of high school there, when his education was interrupted by a move. His grandfather, "Bill" Fowler, owned a farm in Union County on Griggs Road near Boxville and Hermon Valley. Nolie's father, Alexander Washington Fowler Jr., also owned a farm in Union County, not far from the Fowler farm. His father, Alex, had a brother, James, and three sisters, Ella, Laura and Maude. James was Bobby Fowler's father. His Grandpa Bill Fowler raised Bobby in Boxville. J.D. and Bobby always played together at their Grandfather's house.
Alex Fowler moved his family to the Wm. Fowler farm in 1920. The farm house had two rooms upstairs separated by a cubby hole and two living rooms downstairs, each with chimneys. J.D. said, "Mom and Pop slept in one of the living rooms. There were stairs leading upstairs from both rooms. In back of them was a dining room and kitchen. There was a smoke house and a wood house in back of that."
J.D. moved with his parents to Corydon KY in Henderson Co. when he was around 14. His mother died there in 1929. His sister Kathleen was sent to live with her brother David in Arizona. J.D. was passed around in the family. When he was living with Cleo Fowler and her husband, Ed Robertson, they moved to Indiana. He, too, left for Indiana by train, which ran from Henderson to Louisville. From L'ville, he took the interurban to Franklin IN , settled, and married Elma Mae Gill in 1932.

Emma Louise Mann, 75, died Friday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was a resident of Needham Twp. She was born Dec. 25, 1917, in Johnson County. Her parents were Garry Gill and Pearl (Tucker) Gill. She married William Mann, Feb. 1, 1933, in Franklin. He survives and resides in Franklin. Other survivors include four sons, Paul R. Mann of Trafalgar, William A. Mann, Larry Mann and Robert D. Mann, all of Franklin; a daughter, Nellie Trobaugh of Indianapolis; three brothers, Jack Gill of Kansas, Jim Gill of California and Ivan Gill of Arizona; three sisters, Mae Fowler of Franklin, Fern Pevler of Bargersville and Patty Bowman of Whiteland; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, David Gill and Paul Gill. She was employed by Collin's Jewelery, Smith's Jewelry and Major T. Jester department stores (In Franklin). She was a member of the Second Mt. Pleasant Church. The Rev. Dennis Patton will conduct a funeral service at 2 pm Tuesday at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin. James William Mann, 79, died Wednesday at his residence in Franklin. He was born Sept 21, 1914, in Lebanon, Ky. His parents were Calvin Marion Mann and Dorothy Ann (Jarboe) Mann. He married Emma Louise Gill Feb. 2, 1933. She preceded him in death. Survivors include four sons, Larry K. Mann, William A. Mann and Robert D. Mann, all of Franklin, and Paul R. Mann of Trafalgar; a daughter, Nellie Trobaugh of Indianapolis; a sister Catherine Margason of Shelbyville, 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Edward and a sister, Mary.
He attended Needham Township schools. He retired from Arvin Industries after 35 years of service. He also was a farmer. He was a member of Second Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. The Rev. Dennis Patton will contuct a service at 10 am Monday at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin. Friends may call from 2 to 8 pm Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Second Mt. Born in Section 16 Needham Twp. Johnson Co. Indiana. Parents lived on the old Williams (later J.F. Brown) farm at the time of her birth on the Smiley Mill Road (700 E.) approx. two miles south of U.S. 44 on the left. The house is still standing as of 2001 and is owned by Steve and Mary Margaret Fowler Glassburn. When she was a year old, the family moved to their present farm, 1/4 mile north of the Williams place, on the righthand side of 700 East. Was the Effie Holstein farm at the time. J.D. Fowler bought the farm from the Holsteins then sold it to Steve and Mary Glassburn when he retired. The original house on the Fowler farm was built in 1899, a wedding from Effie Brown Holstein's father, J.F. Brown. The barn on the property was built in 1895 and still stands.
Judy and her sisters, Mary and Nola Pearl, attended Needham Grade School and all three graduated from Franklin High School. Judy and Mary graduated from Indiana State University. When Judy was 19, she married Paul Emerson Poe, divorced in 1962. She then married Jerry Lee Liggett in 1967. Two children, Juliana (nmn) and Jennifer Ellen, were born to that union. Divorced in 1986. Married Michael M. Robbins in 1989.
