Katharevousa and Dhimotiki
Katharevousa (καθαρεύουσα) is the name given to a form of the
Greek language which consciously tries to preserve many elements of
Ancient Greek grammar. It is used particularly by the Greek Orthodox
Church (the standard Greek Bible "Βάμβας" is written in
katharevousa), and to some degree by government and lawyers and
people who want to appear learned. The other form of Modern Greek is
Dhimotiki (δημοτική), which is the language a Greek child hears
from its mother; the language spoken by the people. It is not possible
to make a clear-cut distinction, as most people use a mix of both in
their language, with the basis being Dhimotiki. Dhimotiki
is what you will be learning.
