I have to write something every once in awhile or else Emily will take me off her list of cool websites. The topic for today is.......Friends! Not friends as in friends, but Friends as in the TV show. I heard on the news today that Friends was named one of the top ten worst shows in primetime of all time. I don't think so. It's not all that bad. It's just not all that good. Friends used to be good. I used to even watch it, back in those days when I used to watch TV. The first two or three seasons, it was really quite funny, witty, just cool. It should have stopped there. You're aware that Friends spawned numberous "copycat" shows right? Shows that try to emulate the original but to much lesser effect? Well, I think that Friends itself became a Friends copycat. It saw the successes that it enjoyed the first couple of seasons, and tried to emulate themselves. They tried old ideas out rather than coming up with fresh new ones. They started to explore the romantic interests between the characters rather than leaving it as background fodder for more comedy. There are few people now who really like the show. Most just watch it out of habit. And there are few who would tell you that Friends isn't a shadow of its former self.
Friends of course is itself a copycat show, copying Seinfeld. It's like Seinfeld but without losers. Even the losers in Friends, like Ross, are somewhat cool. But it overcame its copycat status to become genuinely funny. For a little while.
You know, a thought just occurred to me. Who the hell cares about shit like this??
