i remember when bush got elected, i thought to myself, oh boy, batten down the hatches, america is going to get its big stick out once again! you can find it on one of my webpage articles i think, i ranted about it for a bit about a year ago. then when the thing crashed into the building, i remember thinking to myself, oh boy, the world just turned upside down. i've mentioned that do you before i think. anyways, yeah. so how long does bush expect this to go on? i think he mentioned it in his speech. did you read the text of it? (by the way, i was slightly confused last night when you asked me about it, because the text of his speech that i read, cut off right before he started talking about axis powers and such things. i wonder why?) anyways, since then, i have read through the whole thing. he does mention somewhere, that he expects the war to go on beyond the end of his administration. damn, i don't remember if it's clear whether he meant the end of his four year term, or the end of his actual administration. is he suggesting that the war will continue for at least 8 more years? in any case......in response to your "how long does he expect it to continue"...i think it's safe to say "a long long long long time".what was he thinking? well, think about it. he didn't have to bring the military into afghanistan. well, you might argue that public pressure meant that he did have to. who knows. he certainly could have limited it to air strikes, as has been the case for most american military operations lately. no, he brought in the ground troops. which, if i'm not mistaken, was not really a legal thing to do under the terms of war, or the geneva convention, or whatever it is. i think that when he did that, it pretty much sealed the deal. and hey. let's face it. the US has wanted to be in a shooting war against iraq for quite awhile now. now they finally have an excuse. buckle up! here come the yanks! this is related to your point about the middle east. see, if the US gets in a shooting war with iraq, that means major major instability for oil. agreed? bush addressed this too. you'll note that in the bottom (much more boring) part of his speech he mentions the need for major development of domestic oil sources. three guesses as to why he wants to do such a thing. =) i'd be sort of surprised if the US doesn't get into a shooting war with iraq.
interesting too, isn't it, his choice of words. axis of evil. bring back any ahem hitlerite ahem memories? that's exactly what he's doing though. he's evoking america's martial glory of days gone by. in 1944, america saved the world for democracy...what was the phrase? oh yeah. they made the world safe for democracy once again. looks like the world's democracy guardians are being called to a higher duty once again. and they are equal to the task. at least that's what i suppose americans are thinking, after hearing the speech. and guess what? this is what they want to think. they want to be saviours of the world. makes them feel warm and fuzzy inside. heroic, really.
afghanistan's interim government? well, i don't have much to say about that, except a quick chuckle. how is it that this karzai guy is better than the taliban? you'll perhaps remember one of the coups that america orchestrated in the 1980's, and put a certain guy in charge.....his name was saddam hussein. oops. as for your average afghani on the streets of kabul...well, it's hard to say. but my guess would be, that they don't much care either way. when you're slowly dying of malnutrition, you don't much care what the ideology of the government is. especially if none of them is feeding you.
as for the palestine/israel question, it's really my view that when clinton's tenure as president ended, so did hope for palestine and israel to find peace. clinton was a great peacemaker. not many people could have done so much to bring together two nations who hate each other with a vengeance. bush is a warmaker. the only kind of peace you'll be likely to find in his tenure, is if he nukes palestine. =) these are sarcastic smiley faces, by the way.
What do you think of the whole thing?
