Betrayed
A little girl
She stands alone
Crying quietly
Her heart more sad
Than it is hard
Though that will change in time
She stretched her hand in innocence
But had to snatch it back
She asked for love and found abuse
Far too many times
But she still believed in fairy tales
And ever after dreams
And so she tried repeatedly
To find the love she sought
She’s grown confused
The walls close in
She reaches out to find
Someone disposed to do her good
And take her in their arms
To honor her and keep her safe
To teach her joy in life
Several more they came along
And took what they would want
They left her lying in the dirt
To clean her small self up
To put the pieces of her life
Together once again
To try and make some sense of it
Though to this day she can’t
But she still believed in fairy tales
And ever after dreams
She got back up repeatedly
To try and live again
She kept believing there was good
That someday would be found
She reached her hand out one last time
A place she thought was safe
This time they took a precious gift
They took the gift of life
Her spirit now is dead and gone
And hope has gone away
This will not change
It’s just that way
Must learn to live without
Without the love
Without the hope
It’s less than it should be
There is no more of fairy tales
Or ever after dreams
Those silly childhood thoughts
Just aren’t realities
Her heart grew cold and hard and still
The years they took a toll
The world’s a dark and scary place
Must fight it tooth and nail
I’ll go against them toe to toe
Never trust a single soul
I’ll not be hurt
So what the cost
My heart’s the casualty
Don’t need it now it served me not
In the childhood that’s my past
I followed it and trusted more
But wished that I had not
The heart's grown cold and hardened now
It dares not take a risk
It hard to know of love and warmth
It’s been dead so very long
