The Robert F Hobson Library

The Robert F. Hobson Library was founded by the Society for the Investigation of Human Values (SIHV) and is housed in the Gaskell House Psychotherapy Centre.

It contains an extensive collection of books and journals related to psychoanalysis, group analysis, psychoanalytic psychotherapy and related topics.

Membership is restricted to members of the North West Institute of Dynamic Psychotherapy (NWIDP) and permanent members of staff at Gaskell House.

There is a collection which duplicates many of the books in the Robert F. Hobson library in the North West of the region, and these can be accessed by any member of the NWIDP. Further details can be obtained from Mr Malcolm Judkins via the NWIDP email.

The Robert F. Hobson library is managed by a part time librarian, Ms Sabrina Duncan, who can be contacted at Gaskell House, or by email.

Dr Robert F Hobson,

Honorary Reader in Psychotherapy, University of Manchester

Bob Hobson trained as a psychiatrist and psychotherapist in London, working as a senior physician at the Bethlehem and Maudsley Hospitals before moving to Manchester as a Consultant Psychotherapist at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, where he played a key role in developing both psychiatry and psychotherapy services.  As a Consultant Psychotherapist Bob was valued and admired as a clinician, teacher, supervisor and researcher.  In his retirement he continued to make a valuable contribution as a supervisor.

In his thirty years' practice Bob developed a method of therapy which has come to be known as the Conversational Model.  His wide and varied interests are evident in many publications which range from psychotherapeutic and psychiatric topics to poetry and religion.  He wrote about the Conversational Model in his book Forms of Feeling: the Heart of Psychotherapy (London: Routledge).

He was an Honorary Reader in Psychotherapy, University of Manchester and a Training Analyst with the Society of Analytical Psychology in London.  He officially opened the library bearing his name in 1997.
