Introduction

The NWIDP administers the courses leading to the North West Diploma in Dynamic Psychotherapy. This is an advanced qualification in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and allows graduates to register as Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), the largest registration body for psychotherapists in the United Kingdom.

Current Training

Over the past 12 months the Diploma Committee had undertaken a review of the course to consider ways in which we could deliver a 4 year UKCP training which would be financially viable and supported by NHS departments. Although we thought we had made good progress with this and there has been work to explore the possibility of re-establishing the course within a social enterprise which essentially means running a not for profit business in the 3rd sector which would provide training and could include working in partnership with the NHS, the Diploma and Executive Committees have decided that, for now, we will put the Diploma course on hold from the end of the academic year 2008.  The existing trainees will all be supported to complete either the qualifying or foundation course.

The Executive Committee of the NWIDP, backed by a generous donation from the SIHV, commissioned a feasibility study into the role of NWIDP and the requirements of NWIDP's members.  The study focused in particular upon NWIDP's training role, assessing whether NWIDP should continue its specialist psychoanalytic training, and judged the viability of offering alternative, more accessible, less specialist training courses.

The outcome from the study is that the NWIDP will focus on taking the Institute forward by initially offering more Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities.  There will also be work into developing the previous training into a format which will offer a foundation level attractive and relevant to a broader range of professionals and an enhanced accredited Diploma level to enable registration with the UKCP.
