How I came to this Path?
I am in my mid 40's and never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would find myself taking this pathway so late in my life. I always was a late bloomer, however, and I always loved new adventures, so perhaps this was a pathway that I was always on!
I was born to an Irish Catholic mother and a non-practicing Methodist Italian father. Both were loving people, who were a bit rebellious and raised all of us 7 children to be independent thinkers. My mom loves her religion, but is not your typical "blind-faith" believer and my dad just always went along with mom. I went to an all-girls Catholic Academy until 6th grade and then a Catholic high school until I graduated. I went to church every Sunday (on pain of death) and received all the required sacraments (Baptism, Holy Communion, Confirmation, etc.) and was married in the Catholic Church. I did all the proper things! There was just one thing missing...
BLIND FAITH!!!
I had too many questions and my mother always encouraged that! She always said, "If you want to change religions, do so with Knowledge and because it fulfills you in a better way than the one you have now. Never leave the Catholic Church because you are angry with some priest or nun. After all, they are just human!" She's also Pro-choice, and believes that priests should be allowed to marry and that women should be allowed to be priests and that the Pope in NOT infallible!! Oh, and I love to watch a priest get her "Irish" up!! She loves nothing more than to argue with a priest! She usually wins, too, because she really knows her religion!!!!
Now that you have some background, here is where things happen for me. Throughout my childhood, I was always fascinated with the Occult. Ah, the dark side of my perfect life!!! I loved spooky stories and read tons of those horror comic books! As I grew, I read Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and John Saul and still do! I experimented with ESP in the 60's when that was popular and even remember reading one of those pocket books about "White Witchcraft"! The more I read, the more I questioned.
Life took hold of me and all this was just a hobby for me until about 2 years ago. My children were growing up and I found the Net. I began to explore my Irish roots and studied Irish history from the Net and from books. I was in a book store and came across a book called, "Witta - An Irish Pagan Tradition" by Ebain McCoy. Well, that was fuel for my fire!!! That book led me down the Path to a whole New World and it suddenly felt right! Like coming home!!
All parts of my personality was fed - my search for my roots, my search for a God/dess in MY image (female), my search for a more balanced 'religion" and my search to touch the earth - ALL IN ONE!!! Other books I had read seemed to make sense (Women Who Run With the Wolves, Self-Reliance and more) and my library began to grow!!
I have been reading and studying since then and practicing (still just a little) since about a year ago and feel so new and so fragile that it is a bit scary. But, it is glorious and fulfilling and joyous at the same time!
My name (Moonowl) was given to me by the God/dess in one of my first mediations and I feel like a rose about to bloom (yes, a little late, but still...) I am giddy with excitement and still, the more I read, the more questions I have.
Does my mother know? Well, not yet, although I think she suspects something is different! Soon I will tell her and she will know that it was because of her, that I had the courage to even try!
All I know for sure is that this is one of the most "right" things I have ever done for myself and I feel very lucky to live during a time when information is so available to me. I look backwards and feel for those who could not practice freely or who could not find a name for what they believed in. I know we still have so far to go, but it gives me hope to see how far we have come.
I look forward to my journey with child-like joy and the utmost peace!
Peace,
MoonOwl
