The Blue Cliff Record is a translation of the Pi Yen Lu , (Hekiganroku in Japanese),
a collection of one hundred Zen koans (KO-an, lit. ko "public," an "case," from the Chinese kung-an)
accompanied by commentaries from the teachings of the Chinese Zen (Ch'an) masters.
Compiled in the twelfth century, it is considered to be one of the greatest treasures
of Zen literature and an essential study manual for students of Zen.

The koans (the "cases") presented here are accompanied by a few
comments from the text of the Blue Cliff Record, and sometimes
by a commentary from some of the students here in the Monastery.
