Capt. Hiram H. Stamper Camp # 1715

MEMBERS & QUALIFICATIONS

The Captain Hiram H. Stamper Camp # 1715 was an outgrowth of the Knott County Historical & Genealogical Society & Library's Civil War Department - Confederate Division. The Civil War Department had begun extensive research beginning in 1993 on those Regiments which Knott County's ancestors had participated in, and more intensive work had begun in June of 1994 when the Rosters of these Regiments included extensive genealogical, cemetery locations, photographs, pension records, etc. A standardized form containing a minimum of seven pages on each man in these many regiments was initiated in 1994.

Membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans is open to all male descendants of any veteran
who served honorably in the Confederate armed forces. Membership can be obtained through
either direct or collateral family lines and kinship to a veteran must be documented genealogically.
The minimum age is 12. Proof of kinship can take many forms. The easiest method is to contact
the archives of the state from which the soldier fought. The SCV is happy to provide a network of
genealogists to assist you in tracing your ancestor's Confederate Service.

ABOUT THE SONS OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS

Following the War Between the States, the surviving Southern soldiers came together to form a veterans organization known as the United Confederate Veterans (UCV). The Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) is the heir to this legacy.

Formed in Richmond, VA in 1896, the SCV continues to serve as an historical, patriotic and non-political organization dedicated to insuring that an accurate history of the 1861-1865 period is preserved for future generations. The SCV operates at a national (SCV), state (Division), and local (Camp) level.

In Kentucky, we take particular interest in the preservation and marking of Confederate soldier's graves and sites of historic significance, publication of scholarly works, and attendance at regular meetings to discuss the military and political history of the period. Also, and perhaps most importantly, Kentucky SCV members are at the forefront of the fight to preserve the honor of the Confederate Soldier.

The SCV rejects any person or group whose actions tarnish or bring dishonor upon the Confederate soldier or his reason for fighting. This particularly applies to those groups and persons using the Confederate flag as a symbol for dishonorable purposes.
