Interview with kaRIN and Statik of . . .

Collide

Interview By: Azriel K.

Azriel: So, tell me about the band :)

kaRIN: We are two people trying to make music that we would want to hear ourselves.
Statik: We want to make music that makes people feel.

Azriel: So what sort of intentions do you have as far as laying down tracks in the music industry goes?

kaRIN: Well ...we decided that the Music Industry pretty much sucks...so we set out on our own in hopes that we could change things, that the artist could actually retain control and survive. So far the verdict is still out, fortunately things are changing due to the internet and you can get your stuff out there more, but it is still very difficult to get it into stores.
Statik: We want to lay down the tracks, instead of following them. I've never really wanted to just do what's already been done. Of course there's influences for everyone, but there's a difference between being influenced by someone, and copying them. We've always tried to take our own path. It really bothers me to go out to a club now and hearing song after song that all sound the same or sound like something that was done 10 years ago. I want to hear something new, and if I can't hear other people do it, I'm going to try to do it myself.

Azriel: What would be your favorite song from Collide and why? Saying all of them doesn't count :P

Statik: I would have to say Pandora's Box. All of the songs on the new album are still too new for me to include them yet. Give me another year, and I'll have a little more perspective.
kaRIN: The one that we have not done yet...sorry I had to say that.

Azriel: What are your touring plans for the next couple years? Do you just want to stick to a general area for now or is the sky the limit?

kaRIN: No touring plans...it?? not really what we do. I think if we thought too much about touring we?? start to change the music more so that instruments could actually be played, that?? not really what we want to do...we want to create something new and that takes all of our energy. I would like to do more video?? though.
Statik: I'm still going to say never say never about touring. We haven't anywhere at this point, but I'm seriously considering something for the new year.

Azriel: How has the band changed you as a person? Or do you feel that the person you are helped develop into the band?

kaRIN: I don't know if the band has changed me as a person at all really, like most people I am just a person trying to make my way through life in the best way that I can. I do think I offer a lot of myself into our music, it's all reflections of how I feel.
Statik: I don't think it's changed me as a person, either. I think being part of a band though, has helped me know what other people are feeling in the bands that I work with. When you write a song and put a lot of time into making it, it really turns into your child.

Azriel: Know any dirty jokes? If so tell me one :)
kaRIN: Okay first I have to confess I had to ask my friend for a joke, because I really do not remember any but here goes...A guy goes into a psychatrist wearing nothing but saran wrap and he says doctor I think there's something wrong with me, I think I have a problem. . . And the Doctor replies well...I can see your nuts??
Statik: I have to admit that I don't know a single one.

Azriel: Some bands describe a sort of Golden Moment if you will when they know they have made it. Have you had that moment, if not do you have any expectations of when it will take place?

Statik: I don't think I have had a golden moment. What would that be? I'm not sure. A Grammy award might be nice, but then I haven't really respected a lot of the people who have been got awards for quite a while...so maybe that's not it either. I really appreciate when people write to us, or reading a good review. Maybe the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, Spin, Alternative Press, and Keyboard in one month?
kaRIN: I have been really lucky to do a lot of cool things and work with a lot of talented people as far as a ??olden Moment??I try to appreciate all my moments, as for one that is far above others...not really I guess, as far as expectations go...I try not to have any as I hate to feel disappointed.

Azriel: I just love that song Wings of Steel. Maybe you can tell me some more background on the song? How it came to be? The meanings of the lyrics?

Statik: It was one of the first songs that we finished, I think. The musical part that really started the song was the dulcimer sample. Musically, the rest just fell into place. I wanted to keep the rest of the arrangement and the drums very simple, and let the vocals carry the song, because they were so strong.
kaRIN: It?? about confronting my own demons...in this case of wondering if I am so busy being driven that life passes me by, I see more of my computer than I do any Human-- Whind up your circuitry loves you the most??

Azriel: A lot of people are complaining about music getting to Techno and Electronic How do you respond to that?

Statik: I love electronic music. I'm not a big fan of music that is really techno though. I think a big problem with a lot of "music" that is out there is that a lot of the songs, aren't really songs at all. There's a lot of technology out there that?? relatively cheap, that allows people to make some really good sounding noise. Sonically, it might sound good, but that doesn't mean that it's a well written song or a song at all.
kaRIN: It's not what you use to make music, it what you do with it, I love the possibility of electronic sounds because the possibilities are so endless...but for me it's got to have some heart and soul...or it's just mindless drivel (we love that word and we use it a lot).
