RUSSIAN MINISTRY NEWS LETTER: DECEMBER 1998
Dear friends!
Warm greetings from Moscow!
The month of November was unusually cold in many aspects. An average
temperature was below zero in Fahrenheit, which makes it the coldest
November in Moscow for the whole 20th century.
Most of the political events were very "cold" too: rising of the
nationalism and anti-Semitism, terrible facts of corruption in highest
ranks of the government and former KGB and finally - awful assassination.
Liberal lawmaker Galina Starovoitova, who became the first woman politician
to be assassinated in Russia on Nov. 21, was one of the country's most
prominent champions of democratic reform.
Starovoitova, 52 year old, was shot dead on Friday night by two attackers
on the staircase of her apartment block in the center of St Petersburg,
Russia's second city.
President Boris Yeltsin described Starovoitova as a "passionate tribune of
democracy who stood at the sources of the new Russia."
"The shots that have interrupted her life have wounded every Russian for
whom democratic ideas are dear. This impertinent challenge is thrown to the
whole of our society," he said.
Please keep on praying "that we may be delivered from unreasonable and
wicked men" in Russian establishment (2 Thes. 3:2).
Our church is moving forward. We led to Christ 57 people during our weekly
evangelistic meetings in the hospital since September 1998.
Praise the
Lord!
A church team was sent to help establishing a new church in Velsk city
which is around 600 miles north from Moscow. People are very hungry for the
Holy Spirit in that area.
We are almost ready to purchase a building in Drezna and then we will start
construction works there.
December will be also the beginning of our anti-abortion ministry. We have
a very impressive video tape about abortions and it's possible to receive
permission from schools' officials and show it to the students. This is so
important because they prohibit all kinds of evangelizations in the public
schools but using this anti-abortion tool we do have open doors to
evangelize students. "Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of
wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves" (Mt
10:16).
Brother Igor is working on his mission field in Uzbekistan. He called us
and informed very briefly that everything is fine. I am awaiting for the
detailed report from him.
Would you please keep on praying for these needs and for the Revival in
Russia. We do appreciate it.
We have contacts with Moscow Mission 'Liberty Through Jesus', which has
developed extensive prison ministries in the Former Soviet Union addressing
both spiritual and physical needs of the imprisoned. Following is the
extract of there letter:
We have contacts with Moscow Mission 'Liberty Through Jesus', which has
developed extensive prison ministries in the Former Soviet Union.
Following is the extract from their cry for help:
"Since the economic crisis hit Russia in August of this year, we have
received a constant flow of letters and reports (many of them from
imprisoned believers) attesting to the deteriorating conditions in prisons.
We know they are true...
We have reports of prisoners with nothing to eat, no adequate clothing, no
medication for the sick and dying.
Can you imagine working in sub-freezing temperatures without gloves? Can
you imagine working in the Siberian cold without wool socks or with boots
full of holes? Without sweater?
Can you imagine eating only a slice of bread with poor grade potato and
water soup day in and day out? Never an orange, never a banana, never
milk, never juice or butter. Never a vitamin..."
Unfortunately we can't help much but we do want to collect the special
offering to buy some medicine and vitamins for our brothers and sisters who
are in prisons.
