SOL - Spindle The Spindle tree (Euonymus europaeus) is small and delicate with a smooth grey bark and tiny white flowers. In the autumn its leaves turn red and it produces pinkish-red fruits which attract the birds and thus spread the seeds. Its wood is hard and was used for making pegs and bobbins and spindles for wood turning, hence its common name. The Spindle tree is associated not so much with thunder but with the flash of illumination and sudden, vibrant power that can bring out the best in us. It is associated with SOL, a Rune of enlightenment. Spindle stresses the delight that comes from persistent endeavour and the creativity that stems from within, and honour that results not from obligation or duty but from unselfish service. |
