Information for Beginning Magical Students

On this page, you will find information that will be helpful to individuals who are beginning to study the art and science of magic.  All of this information is based upon my own teachings as I have developed them over the past 18 years that I have personally been studying magic.  This is my own system.  So, if you are here "by accident" and you are unfamiliar with my methods, you may see stuff that's different from what you've been taught elsewhere.  You may also see stuff that looks very familiar.  I've learned from a lot of different sources - I've "borrowed" a few things from here and there, changed some to suit my needs and made up a few things on my own.  But, that's how things work in the magical world.  Take what you can, change things to suit your needs and then make up your own methods to build on what others have done before you.

To begin with, a few rules for my own students...

Rules for Magical Students

As the instructor is responsible for you magical learning, he or she is also responsible for any magical acts that you might engage in – be they for good or ill.  For this reason, you will be asked to swear loyalty to the instructor and his or her teachings.  You will also be asked to swear to abide by the following rules:

  1. Keep these teachings secret from all who would profane them.
  1. Embrace the Doctrine of Love: Love is the highest Law; Love is the Highest Power.  Everything I See, I View with Love.  Everything I Love, I Will soon See.
  1. Harm no one, either physically or magically, unless it be in self-defense or in the defense of others.
  1. Actively seek out a personal spiritual path that agrees with your magical learning and your personal ideals.  If you have already found such, continue to develop that path and continue to learn and grow upon it.
  1. Respect the spiritual paths of others – even though they may not respect yours.
  1. Honor the sacred in all things.
  1. Perform no magical acts without the knowledge of your instructor.
  1. Keep a magical journal – this may be done by hand or electronically and will be submitted to the instructor periodically.
  1. Maintain your studies and follow your instructions – In other words, read all of the materials that are given to you, complete all of the assignments and exercises that are given to you and do so in a timely manner so that you do not fall behind.

If you find these rules too stringent or otherwise distasteful, it is suggested that you seek elsewhere for instruction.  If not, look them over well and then embrace them.  You will be sworn to uphold them and failure to do so will incur disciplinary action appropriate to the situation.  We will be as fair as possible in assessing any infraction and disciplinary action will range from additional study assignments to “acts of service” all the way up to dismissal from the program.

Start With the Basics

It is very important that you build a firm foundation prior to attempting to do actual magical procedures.  This is why I have posted the first few lessons and exercise in the general content of this web site.  If you have not already done so, go to the "Where to Begin" section.  Read the information there and work through the exercises.  When you feel comfortable that you are properly executing all of the procedures that are outlined there, move on to the more advanced exercises.

The Four Goals of the Magician - These goals are not necessarily something that every magician prescribes too.  However, I present them for my students - who I hope will embrace them - and for anyone else who might find them useful.
