Please print this for future reference. It's not much paper to keep up with, and it can save you a lot of time on the learning curve.
- If the first download site you try doesn't work, try another one if available. Make sure you're downloading the proper version of the program (ie, for Windows 95, 32bit, etc.) before you get the process started. Also, before you download, it's a good idea to know whether your system meets the program's minimum requirements.
- I recommend making a folder on your hard drive labeled "Downloads" or something to that effect. I usually make folders within the downloads folder and extract and or install the program in that folder while I'm evaluating it. I always keep a copy of the downloaded installation program, because you never know when you'll have to FORMAT C: and then be forced to RE-DOWNLOAD shareware and freeware that you really liked or really needed (like device drivers), which is time consuming and should be avoided.
- When you are ready to start downloading, after FINALLY locating the link that actually starts the download, you will see a screen that prompts you (for basically whichever browser you use) that you can open the file from there, or save it to disk. *Choose save to disk*
- You will then be prompted to specify the location to which you want the file to be downloaded. *Specify that you want it saved into the directory you created for downloads*
- It is often a good idea, especially when you'll be trying several different downloads, to rename the downloaded file (which will usually be in a .zip or .exe format) to better indicate which program the file will be installing when you get around to installing the program. This won't affect the operation of the file, and can make your life easier.
