Precious One

Precious one, why do you stop and stare?
Your sweet face peering through the morning air
Is it me you have in your eyes?
If it is I wonder why

Can it be you just can't believe
How I make you laugh and make you grieve?
Never knowing which way to go
   Should you laugh or cry?

So many promises I didn't keep
So many times I cut you hard and deep
So many nights you cried yourself to sleep
A prisoner of my grit and greed

How many times will I shout and scream?
How many times will I dash your dreams?
'til your love stops flowing in an endless stream
Through this heart choked with wood and weeds

Oh precious one, if I could only be
The man those hopeful eyes always see
Maybe then I'd feel that I have earned
The boundless love you somewhere learned

Oh precious one, I can only praise
The hopeful love I see in your gaze
Keep on smiling, maybe I'll believe
   It's something I deserve
