Jessica Wakefield thought this day was going to be a nice boring day like others. But, boy, was she surprised!
When Jessica took her seat in homeroom, there, sitting next to her, was the most beautiful girl she had ever seen. Her dark, flowing curls hung around her face, except one strand was pinned behind her right ear. She had small gold hoops in her ears. Her legs were tightly crossed because her miniskirt was so tight. She wore a loose button down shirt with no sleeves. And on her feet were the highest heels Jessica had ever seen.
Jessica's best friend Lila was staring at the girl, too, like she was some part of a fantastic dream. As the girl looked up, all the boys seemed to have caught her eye. Even the most popular boys at school gazed at her.Jessica thought she and the girl could become friends, and then she could become a cheerleader. Cheerleaders were the 'thing' at SVH, and Jessica was the cocaptain of the team.
The bell rang and the teacher announced the new girl. "Corrina, please stand up so everyone can see who you are." The new girl stood gracefully and smiled her perfect smile. "Hello," she said smoothly. Out of the corner of her eye, Jessica saw goosebumps on Bruce Patman's arm.
"Why don't you sit with us,the cheerleaders?" asked Jessica at lunch, hoping she sounded good enough for her.
"Oh, thank you, Jessica," said Corrina, smoothing back her hair. "I--"
Oh, please say yes, prayed Jessica silently. If you say no, I'd absolutely die!
"Sure," said Corrina, "But first let me get some Coke. Save me a spot!" she winked and turned her back.
Jessica felt as light as a feather. She floated over to her usual table and sighed. "Corrina's sitting with us."
"Oh, goody!" squealed Annie.
"You know, we've only been at school for a couple of hours," said Amy, "and I've heard she's already been asked for seventeen dates!"
"Wow," breathed Robin and Maria.
Corrina came over to sit with them, coke in hand. She took a seat next to Jessica.
"So, Corrina," said Jessica. "You've spent most of your time with the cheerleaders. How would you like to become one?"
"Oh, I'd love to," said Corrina happily.
"Great!" cried Sandy, "we could use another member."
And so that was that. Corrina was made a cheerleader. She went for lots of dates. She had a great time at school.
"Okay, girls,"said Jessica at their first performance with Corrina, "remember to do your ariel back handsprings."
Corrina smoothed her hair. "Oh, geez, I'm really nervous!"
"Don't be nervous!" soothed Jean. "It'l be okay. You do really good back tucks."
"Thanks," whispered Corrina.
They did the best performance. And after, the cheerleaders celebrated with ginger ale and cookies. But first--
Corrina stared in the audience. "Look, jessica," she said, "that boy--he's sooo cute! And he-- oh, Jess! he's staring at me! What should i do?"
"Who is it? Oh, that guy, with the brown hair? the one with the striped shirt?"
"Yes!" cried Corrina.
"I've never seen him before. He must be new."
"Perfect for me!" Corrina sighed deeply.
"Go up and find out what his name is. Ask him to go for a walk with you near the beach. And then ask him for a date." Jessica instructed.
"Okay," Corrina smoothed her skirt and started up the stadium stairs until she found her boy. The talked and laughed for a few minutes, and then Corrina pointed to the door. He nodded and smiled. She took his hand and they went outside.
The next morning, Corrina and the new boy were walking to homeroom, hand in hand. Corrina introduced him to all the cheerleaders. "Hi, guys, this is Barry. I met him last night. he and I are going out this Friday."
Jessica smiled to herself. The new girl had found her perfect mate.
