GEOGRAPHY

 

 

 

Greece, or Hellas as Greeks prefer it, is a country located in Southern Europe, in a peninsula called Balkan. Greece is a Mediterranean country, as it borders the Mediterranean Sea on the west and south. It borders Albania, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (F.Y.R.O.M.), and Bulgaria on the north, and Turkey on the east.

It is a small country with an area of only 131,957 sq. km. (50,944 sq. m.), most of which is mountains, but its uncountable islands occupy almost 9,717 sq. m. and its total coastline is 9,334 m. The most important island groups are: Cyclades, Sporades, Dodecanese and the Ionian isles.

Its population is 10,240,000 people. Almost half of them live in the country's capital city, Athens. Some other big towns are: Thessaloniki, Patra, Kavala, Alexandroupolis.

The most important mountains are: the Pindus range, mount Olympus, mount Smolikas, and mount Parnassos. In the north, there is the Rhodope range and mount Athos. The major rivers are: Evros, Strymonas, Aliakmonas, Nestos, Acheloos, Sperkhios, Axios, and Pinios. In Greece there are some small lakes including the lakes of Lagada, Volvi, and Prespes.
