Software

We cannot evaluate CCC software as a single unit because each course is offered in different quality and feature levels. In general, they are all easy to use and easy for the teacher to control . Students on the other hand, have little control on the material. They cannot stop in the middle of an exercise or discipline area to do something different. In our case, since the schools are "prescribed", this is desired. Nevertheless, this can be frustrating and create negative feelings toward the software.

Its key features can be described as:

  • Individualization by program: default or by teacher customization. This means that every child has his/her own log-in number and the teacher can modify the strands that the program will follow according to the specific needs of that student. The time spent on each topic can be customized too.

  • Automatic branching and motion. This means that the program "responds" to the student's reactions.

  • Self - pacing. The students work at their own pace. The computer will slow down or speed up accordingly.

  • Automating record keeping. It is able to keep truck of every student's progress and give statistical information in various forms.

CCC software components have some common icons such as a Help icon that gives away the answer to the exercise; that means the student gets no point from that question. Therefore, students are not encouraged to use it, since getting points and obtaining an above average grade is the biggest positive feedback for them.  There is also an Audio Repeat icon- wherever there is audio. The number of times a student uses it will be mentioned on the student's report. The report icon is there for the students to use. They can actually see at any point their report card and check their progress, a thing they very often do.

In what follows, we will describe and evaluate each of the software components of CCC "Success Maker":

Reading Readiness is the software designed for K-1 grade level. The course strands it contains are : letter identification, visual discrimination, auditory discrimination, vocabulary, comprehension, special activities. It has audio which is of good quality and helps the children learn new contexts. It has a number of activities and gives a lot of repetition of the Alphabet letters. If the children have some training on how to use the computer and the software - which at that level requires only clicking with the mouse- they can make a lot of progress.

Initial Reading is the software designed for 1-2 grade level. The course strands it contains are : letter identification, patterns, sight words, word comprehension, sentence comprehension, passage comprehension. This has audio too, of good quality. The graphics are really nice without being destructive. It really looks as if somebody opened a book to read a story. It also has a lot of features that allow the students  to get help from the software. The students have choices here. They can listen to the whole story or they can highlight words and then listen to those words read by some adult voice.

Reader's workshop is the software designed for 3 - 7.9 grade level. The course strands it contains are : word analysis, word meaning, literal comprehension, interpretive comprehension, reference skills, passage comprehension, thematic lessons. This is slightly different from the previous ones as it is more of a drill and practice nature. It can become boring, since exercises follow a similar style and repeat themselves. The content is a bit below grade level.

Math concepts and skills  is a software designed for K - 9.00 grade level. The course strands it contains are : addition for: 0.10 - 8.90 grade level, applications for: 2.00 -8.80 grade level, decimals for: 3.00 - 8.9 grade level, division for: 3.50 - 8.90 grade level, equations for: 2.00 - 8.95 grade level, fractions for: 1.10 - 8.90 grade level, geometry for: 0.03 - 8.90 grade level, measurement for: 0.10- 8.70 grade level, multiplication for: 2.50 - 8.90 grade level, number concepts for: 0.01 - 8.90 grade level, probability for: 7.00 - 8.9 grade level, problem solving for: 2.10 - 6.80 grade level, science applications for: 3.30 - 7.40 grade level, speed  games for: 2.00- 8.90 grade level, subtraction for:  0.60 - 8.90 grade level, word problems for: 0.50 - 8.90grade level. It is a drill and practice software, having the same type of questions in a rotating fashion. It can become rather boring, but it helps students practice. The language could have been simpler.  The mathematical concepts are a bit above grade level.

CCC offers more software suitable for elementary level education. This includes:

a) text - based courses: Problem Solving for grades 3.1 - 6.9, Practical Reading Skills for grades 4 - 6, Language Art Strands for grades 3 - 7, Keyboard Skills, etc.

b) graphics -  based courses: Math Concept and Skills Spanish for grades 0.0 - 5.99, Math Investigations for grades 5.0 - 8.9, Reading Adventures for grades 3.0 - 6.9, Writer's Express for grades 3.0 - 6.9, Spelling Skills for grades 2.0 - 8.9, Discover English; level 1 & 2 for grades K - 3.0, First Adventures Bookshelf for grades pre K - 2.9. CCC has also some courses for adults, which will  not be mentioned here.
