Medieval Square Magick

Medieval Square Magick

This instruction is from the Book of Angels, Rings, Characters and Images of the Planets, attributed to Osbern Bokenham, J. G. Lidaka translation. It outlines a method of magic utilizing the well-known "magic squares" associated with the planets, where the square is constructed of some certain material and used after the manner of a talisman. Often as not, the device is constructed and used more offensively than defensively (as is typical with talismanic magic in general.) No specific consecration is mentioned. Of Venus it is written:

The figure of Venus is square and has a grid of 7, and it is a figure of luck proper to woman's matters and all delights and sex. When you wish to work magic with this figure, see that Venus be in Pieces, for there is its exaltation, or in Taurus or in Libra, which are its houses, and that it be benefic and increasing in brightness, fast in its course and rising direct. Prepare 7 drams of pure silver in its day (Friday) and hour; make a thin plate and write on it the figure; suffumigate it with aloe wood, ambrosia, and mastic; wrap it in white silk cloth; and then carry it with you. And all the women you see will love you, and you will behold miracles. And if a man or woman is slow to marry, let that person carry it and that person will soon marry. And if your wife or some other favorite hates you, wash the aforesaid plate with spring water or rose water and give it to her to drink, and she will love you and do as you wish. And if you boil chamomile and wash the plate and sprinkle that water in places of discord or in any places or the world, all evil will cease. And if you sprinkle this water in business places or farms, they will prosper. And if you put this figure in your bed, you will abound in sex and your wife will love you very much.
