The Western Heptarchy

planetary medallions

WELCOME to Western Heptarchy reference pages. Herein you will find a fairly complete compendium of information refering to the various traditions and lore attached to the seven visible planetary bodies the Greeks called planesthai, the "wanderers". Note well that the Greeks were far from alone in their reverence of these primal forces. Traditions such as those of the Zoroastrians, Babylonians and Hebrews teach that the One God, in Whom All is Truth, made seven lights, seven deities or seven archangels to watch over the affairs of the universe. The later Neoplatonists went so far as to intimate that these seven beings were real in a more interior sense, being divisions of the psyche that might be fortified or reduced, as the situation demanded.

While this page is intended to supplement the appendix given in The Book of the Glyph, all magicians operating in the Western Traditions will find it useful, as will the more casual scholar of ancient and amusing lore. There is a strong accent on the traditions of the Order Aurum Solis, and indeed, we are incredibly indebted for much of the material to the prolific pen and thorough scholarship of the late Melita Denning and of Osbourne Phillips, recent Grand Masters of the Order. Aleister Crowley makes his appearance too, for the work is supplemented where necessary by the Master Therion's comments, where they stray beyond the usual track, (as oft they do). Trolling further back in time, we find more sources in the work of Henry Cornelius Agrippa, plumbing the depths of his Three Books of Occult Philosphy for what has not been mentioned elsewhere. The Keys of Solomon (Mathers' translation), an excellent text by Frater M. M. E. A., and the experiences of the authors of the Book of the Glyph help round this list out.

These correspondences are based upon traditional Qaballistic correspondences from a variety of traditions. For a related collection of correspondences arising from the Tree of Life glyph, see The Tree of Life Project.
