The suspense novel tells the story of a young woman caught in a conspiracy of treachery, piracy, and murder. The novel was made into a motion picture by Alfred Hitchcock and starred Maureen O'Hara and Charles Laughton (Jamaica Inn, 1939).
In the novel, Daphen du Maurier mentions a squire from North Hills that owned all the land around Jamaica Inn, his name is Mr. Bassat!
