Abraham Lincoln
President

Phil Chetwynd

Phillip A. Chetwynd has been a devoted scholar of Lincoln since grade school, studying the character, philosophy, and common sense of this simple country lawyer who became the definitive leader of our nation. Chetwynd began performing in living history programs in 1976, and in the late 1980s, found a long-sought outlet for his first passion: the portrayal of President Abraham Lincoln. From Maine to Virginia, LINCOLN FOR THE AGES has performed at dozens of schools; for civic & municipal festivals and parades; for commercial, corporate, professional, and political functions; for historical societies and museums; at re-enactments; at national film grand openings; and for film roles in historical documentaries.

Chetwynd brings to his presentation a strong, convincing sense of Lincoln. Dressed in historically accurate clothing, he has a real beard styled after Lincoln's, and cultivates the gentle tenor voice described by contemporaries, accented with a mild Southern drawl revealing Lincoln's Kentucky roots. For all practical purposes, he is Abraham Lincoln, equally comfortable making a formal speech to a political convention or conducting a "press conference" with fifth-grade students.

His strength and challenge is in one-on-one interaction with any audience. He fields questions ranging from the Negro question to reconstruction. Hard-nosed historians cannot shake him from his first-person portrayal, supported by his wealth of knowledge of Lincoln as a whimsical and devoted family man, as a shrewd and determined politician, as a private and troubled individual burdened by personal loss and national tragedy.
