Information from the book, "Early Adventurers On The Western Water: Volumn I, The New River of Virginia in Pioneer Days, 1745 - 1800"
Richard Whitt first appears in the records of the New River in 1769, when he served as a witness to a deed from James Skeggs, Sr. to James Skeggs, Jr.
In 1774, he had a tract of 205 acres surveyed on Meadow Creek and in 1782 a survey for 285 acres was made. From Skeggs he purchased lands including the "old ferry place" of 100 acres in 1786. When the "old ferry place" was sold to John Ingles in 1797 it was noted that this is where the Whitts lived (Chalkley, Chronicles, III, 490; Fincastle and Montgomery County surveys and deeds; Summers, Annals, pp. 911, 917; Montgomery County Deed Book C. p. 66).
In July 1785 Richard Whitt, a minister of the Baptist Chruch, "having produced to the court his ordination and certificate of his being in regular communication with a "Society of Christians" following an oath to the state entered his bond so that he could perform the marriage ceremony in Montgomery County (Summers, Annals, p. 789).
Richard Whitt wrote his will April 25, 1807 and witnesses were William Cassiday and Thomson Lawrence. The will was recorded in January 1813 (Montgomery County Will Book 2, p 120). Archibald Whitt, son of Richard was to include the land bought from John Harrison on Meadow Creek, supposed to contain about 100 acres, to include the part wich was allotted to son Richard, Jr., which Archibald bought and for which no title was made. The wife, not named in the will, but called betsy in deeds (Deed Book E, p. 203, 1811) was entitle to her one-third of the estate, and the balance went to the three daughters, Elizabeth Cassiday, Ruthy Whitt, and Susanna Creswell. Ruth Whitt married Jesse Whitt in 1817 (Montgomery County marriages).
There was no inventory or appraisal of the estate of Richard Whitt but a brief settlement statement appears in Montgomery County Will Book 2, p. 394, dated may 1816. Certain amounts of cash were paid to Henry Cresswell, Ruth White, Abijah Whitt, the clerk, and the sheriff, and a balance of 115.75 remained for distribution to the legatees. From Ancestral File (TM), data as of 2 January 1996.
