WRITING 1

IF YOU PLEASE

Construct a 300-400 word essay based on a reading of a site, a garden or trio of gardens or a film (those listed in syllabus under "Anxiety, Mannerism, Insurrections" or "Absolute History, Hegemony, Enlightenment".

Submit a draft, by e-mail (as attachment), to ateliermp@netscape.net

After initial feedback, refine and polish the argument (syntactic and semantic form) speaking in your own voice, avoiding quotations and paraphrases, citing appropriations (of ideas) by usual scholarly apparatus (bibliography, end notes, etc.).

Draft deadline - October 16 (by email)
Final deadline - October 23 (by email & hardcopy)

Sample subject matter:

1/ Discuss the nature of 'time itself' as expressed in gardens visited in class
2/ Review a key reading or optional text that has multiple implications to the understanding of Renaissance or Baroque gardens (e.g. Vasari's Lives, Descartes' Meditations)
3/ What is the essence of the 'Mannerist' moment (the 1520s)?
4/ Decode a Renaissance or Baroque garden and its iconography (discuss the symbolic or allegorical content)
5/ Find and delineate an appropriation of Renaissance or Baroque cultural history (as seen through the eyes of a third party - e.g. contemporary filmmaker, musician, painter, sculptor, landscape architect)
6/ Examine various garden commissions of Le Notre and discuss how they represent the worldview of the royal or aristocratic patron
