Dear Members,
WELCOME to the Board. Now that you have signed up with PlanetAll, you can go exploring; they've many groups (including Hagerstown Junior College and HJCArt, the Art Club Board).

I (Brian) went to the Hager House with my brother on Sunday; the admission was $3.00. The house is sparsely decorated by my standards, but the lecture on the different customs in the different parts of Germany (and Moravia--now part of Czech Republic) is worth it. I liked the pyramid candle holder custom--that might be profitable here.

They don't know exactly where J. Hager was from in Germany, hence the overview of traditions.

Everyone: Good luck on exams!

The first meeting of the new year is Tuesday, 13 January 1998.

Let's start the new year off right and celebrate by burning our President at the stake--an old Maori custom that should be revived, I think.

OK, it was worth a try....
[NOTE: Previous was just the Pagekeeper kidding around]

See you in C-18A at 11:30!

** The first meeting of January will be on the 20th, not the 13th as stated in the previous message.

Same room (C 18-A), same week day (Tuesday), same time (11:30).

** Brian made new flyers for the board, but it needs redecoration.

**With remaining year-end funds, do we: have a One Nation Theme day, Buy a Language tape course for the library, have a raffle, buy stuff for the donated shortwave?

** Brian went to the Miller House on Boxing Day (26 December 1997). The tour was $3, and took about an hour.

The rooms were well-decorated by each of the garden clubs. Each of the clubs did a room, with the theme of how one nation or one region (like the Carpethian Mountains) celebrates the season. It was well worth it. They've a splendid timepiece collection, as well as an antique doll collection.

The basement library for genealogy remains open, but the house tours will resume in the spring with a motif of that season.

THE CLUB MINUTES this Spring
At the 27 January meeting, officers elected were: Meaghan Barry, Treasurer; Tiffany Fordham, SGA Representative; Lisa Younkins, Secretary.

The two top positions were up for grabs still.

At the 3 February meeting, we learned that Jessica couldn't be President. Lisa Younkins volunteered, but since there were so few of us there, voting was postponed till the 10 February meeting.

At the 10 February meeting, it was obvious to all that Lisa had re-ensconced herself in the power of the presidency. No-one protested. (No human would dare.)[NOTE: Pagekeeper is just kidding]

The flyers promoting the group have been ordered, as have the radio and guide.

We've changed to the larger bulletin board on the outside wall of CLR 125, after Brian Simmons got permission from Mr. Jim Riffle.

At the 17 February meeting, Lisa and Keith Jones took the old stuff off the new bulletin board, and Brian took the stuff off the old bulletin board.

While Lisa and Keith decorated the new board, Brian found homes for the miscellany that was left over on other boards.

At the 24 February meeting, we put up the 3 Cezanne posters Brian brought and put them on the bulletin board. We still had blank space. We should receive the radio shortly; the check had cleared.

Plans were finalized for our Foreign Language Week Celebrations.

At the 4 March meeting, we readied ourselves for our festivities.

[See FOREIGN LANGUAGE WEEK posting below.]

FOREIGN LANGUAGE WEEK
From PlanetAll Member: Brian Simmons

For the week of 2 March thru 6 March:

Tuesday, we showed Au Revoir, Les Enfants at the Kepler at 6 pm.

• We had delicious FOODS Wednesday in the Auditorium: A feta salad by Keith Jones, fried rice by Meaghan Barry, and flan by Prof. Terrie Angle, our sponsor. All washed down with cola and root beer.

• SPEAKERS ON FOREIGN LANDS was on Thursday in CLR 111 between 11:30 am. and 12:40 pm. It featured talks on Honduras, St. Maarten, N.A./Ile de St. Martin, France, and pre-war Germany and environs.
*****************************************************************************
We finally received the radio at the 17 March meeting. Afterwards, we presented it to the Brish Library. [front page news on next edition of the college Hawk.]

Brian bought vintage foreign post cards at the Interstate Coin Show and put some up on the Bulletin Board. Also, we received info from the eastern European embassies he had called.

We talked of the Art Club's MONET trip on 24 March. Also, after the meeting, Brian checked on the radio. We'll donate some coins for the Easter Egg hunt.

The next meeting is on Tuesday, 31 March 1998 in CLR 125 (Old C 18-A), at 11:30 am.

** Topics: Re-decorate the Bulletin Board, finalize any trips, plan spending any surplus, and prepare the Easter paraphenalia.

FINAL NOTES: We donated 75 foreign coins to the SGA Easter Egg Hunt. We put the coins in coin covers and labelled them by country (most correctly).

After Easter, the club pretty much disbanded. Brian did put up the Macedonia, Croatia, Latvia, and Estonia information, but the club did not give out Easter baskets to the kids at Washington County Hospital.

_________________Fall 1998 NEWS OF THE I-CLUB:_________________

Our new German student,
Matthias Podzuhn, a 21-year-old from west-central Germany, has found a host family.

As of 21 September 1998:
We have discussed finding a driver to haul us to events in the region.

Preliminary plans for the Halloween bags for the Washington County Hospital's sick kids were made.

Ideas for a BIG Trip, possibly to Montréal, Miami, or New Orleans were brought up. The alternative is to go on the Art club's New York Weekend.

On September 22:
A new club member, Emeka May, from Nigeria, joined in.

We decided: 1) To place an ad in the HCC Newsletter for a driver (and more members). 2) To go on the Art Club trip to New York this December, rather than trying to organize a trip to Miami, New Orleans, or Montréal--though we may try one of these at spring term's end. 3) To hold ELECTIONS next week. and: 4) To meet on Tuesdays at 11:30 am, as we did most of last year.

We plan to go to Baltimore all day Saturday, 3 October 1998 to "do our own things"--and get the international students acclimated with the Monumental City.

On September 29 and the rest of the week:
On Tuesday the 29th, we welcomed another student from Nigeria, Abayomi (Yomi) Adeshina and finalized our plans to Baltimore. We postponed elections until next week.

On Friday, 2 October: Brian Simmons attended the SGA-sponsored Leadership Conference at the Ramada Inn in Hagerstown for us. Topics discussed included cooperation among the clubs, increasing membership, and how to conduct a meeting. Emphasis was on understanding that the Student Government Association is an umbrella organization for all students and clubs.

College President Shea and Dean Galligan came to speak at the conference and answered questions.

On Saturday, 3 October: we all showed up and went to Baltimore. We went to Fells Point, which was having its Fun Fest, and we all went to the Inner Harbor's National Aquarium, where we saw the dolphin show.

On October 6:
We reviewed the Baltimore trip. Although most students went home 1-1/2 hours early, the majority rented a couple of movies and watched them together.

Brian Simmons related what happened at the SGA-sponsored Leadership Conference. As Club Representative, he got a consensus from the club on issues raised at that meeting that may come up for a vote at the SGA meeting on 22 October.

We finally elected Fall Semester officers. (See below.) This roster is the most international of any HJC/HCC International Club ever, according to Professor Angle.

We talked of other club's upcoming events and how we might be a part of them.

On October 13:
We discussed fundraising possibilities. The foreign foods mentioned might be too costly, so we might bake a sheet cake decorated with countries' flags to sell by the slice at the 5/14 Club Yard Sale in November.

We plan on having a 50/50 Raffle, with the drawing at the 5/14 Yard Sale.

President Jennifer Harbaugh is to purchase the raffle tickets needed. Proceeds from the above will help fund our tag-along on the Art Club's New York trip.

Club Representative Brian Simmons reported on the State Leadership Conference at Harford Community College. He received the endorsement of the I-Club to run for SGA Club Executive.

On October 20:
Brian suggested we sign up for the Science Club Hike in Shenandoah National Park in November.

Karin described the previous weekend's Pow-Wow held in the ARCC Building.

It was suggested that we ask the Art Club if they would drop us off and pick us up at the Youth Hostel, for a fee of $20-$25, so our club's cost would be lower. We polled our ranks to see how many would be in favor of this option. Most liked this choice.

We decided to have a brief meeting on Monday the 26th to prepare the Halloween bags for children in Washington County Hospital as patients the "week" of 27 October until 3 November.

Karin's friend, Katie Dunn, joined the club.

On October 27:
We gathered our contributions for the Halloween bags--the bags will be full of postcards, foreign coins, Halloween decorations, and, little key chains, thanks to Karin De La Cruz's mother sending them to us from Peru. Jennifer Harbaugh volunteered to assemble and deliver the bags.

We decided to go ahead with our 50/50 Raffle, with each ticket costing $1, or 6 for $5. The drawing was on Sunday, 22 November 1998 at the 5/14 Club's Yard Sale at the ARCC.

We planned to assemble on Saturday, 21 November to bake cakes to sell on the following day's 5/14 Club Yard Sale at the ARCC.

We received our reimbursements for some of our expenses incurred on the Baltimore trip of October 3.

Club Representative Brian Simmons reported on the happenings at the previous Thursday's Student Government Association's (SGA's) meeting. He was elected (by default) to represent all clubs on the SGA Executive Committee. He was elected Chair of the SGA Communications Committee.

In November:
We planned our participation in the 5/14 Yard Sale, which included selling pieces of cake decorated with club members' countries' flags, cupcakes, laminated vintage postcards, and foreign coins.

Most club members went to Katie Dunn's house on Saturday, 21 November to watch videos--President Jennifer Harbaugh made and decorated the cake to save time. Katie and her mother, Joyce, donated items to sell at the sale for the Club's benefit.

Club members also brought their own wares to sell individually. We sold 50-50 chances before and during the Yard Sale, and the raffle, which was drawn by 5/14 Club President Michelle Powers at the end of the Yard Sale, brought in over $50. Though the Yard Sale was sparsely attended, individuals did sell some of their stuff, and a profit--when including the raffle proceeds--was made.

In December:
At our last two meetings in December 1998, some of us gave our "Secret Friends" gifts.

Four club members went on the Art Club's New York City Trip. Karin De La Cruz, Katie Dunn, Matthias Podzuhn, and Brian Simmons--who was also Art Club President--went to Gotham. It started at the school at 5 am. on Sunday, 20 December until the return to the school at 10:30 pm. on Tuesday, 22 December 1998.

The United Nations, the Empire State Building, the Staten Island Ferry, and the Statue of Liberty were seen by some trip goers. All four went to Terra Blues, a night club, on the last night of the trip.
