What is the Linden Tree Coffeehouse?

Since 1985, the Linden Tree Coffeehouse has been located in the social hall of the Unitarian Universalist Church in downtown Wakefield. Annually there are about twelve acoustic music concerts featuring local and national singer-songwriters, playing a wide range of folk music from contemporary, traditional, bluegrass, and blues. Most of the performers can be heard on local folk radio stations such as WUMB (91.9), WERS (88.9) and WGBH (89.7). Complete information about each performer may be found in articles printed in The Wakefield Daily Item, Wakefield Observer, and the Middlesex East supplement to the Chronicle.

Many of the coffeehouse regular patrons come each month because of the wonderful talent, friendly atmosphere, fresh coffee, and homemade baked goods. There are two to three hours of live entertainment for about the price of a movie. Performers like playing in the Linden Tree because of the quality sound system and because of the great audiences who make it exciting for them. Each concert is more like a party where people of all ages meet and enjoy each other.

The Linden Tree Coffeehouse is run by a staff of "professional" volunteers. New volunteers are always needed for baking before concerts, serving during the shows, and, especially, for setting up and cleaning up in exchange for free admission to shows. Call Wendy at 781-246-9751 for more info on volunteering.

Music from Coast to Coast: with
Claudia Russell and Curt Bessette

Named Best New Artist of the Year 2000 by WUMB-FM, Californian Claudia Russell has a style all her own, combining folk music with traces of blues, western swing, rock, and country. Marilyn Rea Beyer, music director of WUMB says “Claudia really pours her heart into every song she sings...and she seems to have a knack for writing and finding great songs.” Her performance will feature new music as well as songs from her debut CD Song Food.

Maine's Curt Bessette, a Linden Tree favorite for over 10 years, returns to celebrate the Massachusetts release of his latest CD A Few Seconds with My Father. This wonderful collection of original songs shows his passion for history and his desire to keep the stories alive. Audiences are never quite sure where his humor will take him or them. To a reader of World War II non-fiction, the most compelling songs on Bessette's latest release are those that in some aspect are connected to the crucible of battle. He also blends the themes of loss and remembrance throughout his songs.
