Course Description
This course provides you with an introduction of the cultural evolution of the Native American inhabitants of the state of California and surrounding areas.
It is designed so that you comprehend the scope of their diverse cultural patterns by understanding the environmental factors that shaped each sector of our state.
The course will first look at the cultural variation between the different sectors of the territory.
It then traces the origins of the various cultural families by focusing at the earliest archaeological evidence.
The last section looks at the indigenous Californians' recent history and the impact of European, Mexican, and Anglo settlers since the Mexican colonial period.

Other Requirements
You are required to have an e-mail account and access to the Internet in order to be periodically updated
and to complete the quizzes and assignments.
Grading Policy
The semester grade will be based on two mid-term exams (25% each), a final exam (35%), quizzes, assignments and group projects (15%).
All late assignments will be graded down.
Attendance Policy
You will be dropped from the course if you exceed six (6) absences.
Make sure you are familiar with the "Attendance Policy" listed in you Schedule of Classes, Spring 2002 handbook.
Other
Come prepared to take notes and ready to participate in class discussions and in group presentations.
Check your e-mails for updates on assignments, quizzes and other projects.
It will also be the manner by which I will contact you if I do not attend class.
Do not bring cellular phones or beepers to class.
