Course Description

A survey of the origin and development of the cultures of Mesoamerica (Central and Southern Mexico, Guatemala, Beliz, El Salvador, and parts of Honduras and Nicaragua) and the Chichimec and Greater Chichimec Areas (Northern Mexico and Southwest USA) also known as "Oasis America." The regions occupied will be the principle focus of this course.

The periods covered will encompass from the early hunter and gatherer socieites to the farming communities and civilizations the Spanish cpmqiostadprs encountered.

Grading Policy

The semester grade will be based on the following: two mid-term exams (20% each), final examination (30%), group project (20%), and participation, discussions, and attendace (10%). All late assignments will be graded down.

A printed copy of all the material submitted through the e-mail also needs to be turned in (typed, double-spaced, with references, and with an appended cover page; a list of guidelines will be given out in class).

Extra Credit

You can earn up to 10% above your term grade by completing a written report of 7 double-spaced pages, to be turned in Wednesday, November 20. It is mandatory to get topic approval by the instructor prior to its commencement (You must use at least one of the recommended readings as a principal source). Field reports of events, presentations, symposiums, and conferences approved by the instructor can also be considered for extra credit.

Attendance Policy

If you exceed six (6) absences during the semester, whether they are excused or unexcused, you may be dropped from the course. Let me know in advance if you are to miss a class. Make sure you are familiar with the "Attendance Policy" listed in you Schedule of Classes.

Come prepared to take notes and ready to participate in class discussions and in group presentations. Check your e-mails for updates on assignments, quizzes and other projects.
It will also be the manner by which I will contact you if I do not attend class. Do not bring cellular phones or beepers to class.
