ChemCom Information
Mrs. Lisa Kern

Who is Mrs. Kern?

I am a graduate of the Purdue University School of Science. I have a BA in Biology and a Secondary Teaching Certificate. I was a substitute teacher in Hendricks County for a year and a half and I did my student teaching at Danville High School. I am married and we have four and a half year-old son. I like to spend my spare time hiking, camping, canoeing, and scrapbooking. I am really looking forward to my third year teaching at Pike High School!

What will we be doing this year?

We will be using the American Chemical Society’s Chemistry in the Community textbook. We will be focusing on units covering water, chemical resources, petroleum, gases, and nuclear chemistry. These units explain how chemistry affects our daily lives and what you can do to help our environment.

What are Mrs. Kern’s classroom rules?

I have four qualities I expect my students to demonstrate:
1. Responsibility
2. Respectfulness
3. Honesty
4. Positive attitude toward learning

What materials are required for class?

1. ChemCom textbook
2. Appropriate writing utensils (no red pen)
3. Lined, loose-leaf paper (no “fuzzy edges”)
4. ChemCom binder (will be graded during each test)

What procedures will we have?

1. Turn papers in the tray marked for your class period.
2. Ask before removing papers from any tray.
3. Do all assignments on loose-leaf paper in pencil or blue or black pen.
4. Ask before removing anything from my desk.
5. Pick up papers from the demonstration table every day as you enter the room.
6. Stay in the classroom unless you have my permission to leave (unless there is an emergency).
7. Lab supplies and equipment will always be found on either the supply table or at your lab station.
8. Before asking me a question, ask your lab partners and the lab group next to you.
9. You will be issued one "late slip" which may be used on any assignment (except study guides). This must be attached to the assignment and turned in within ONE CLASS MEETING of the original due date. Assignments turned in after this time will be given no credit. Extra late slips can be earned every time you get an A or A- on a test. Unused late slips can be turned in at the end of the semester for five extra credit points each. Late assignments for students following absences will follow PHS school policy.
11. No credit will be given for papers with no name. 1
