Uncle Dee and Aunt Delia lived their early married life in Lee County where they soon established a general store in the Gilvo Community (Old Bethlehem). They had built up a large inventory when a fire destroyed the building and everything in
it.
Dee worked on highway construction jobs in the early years
when work was done by mules and scrapers.
They drifted to Arkansas and eventually returned to Mississippi.

Notes for DELIA PARHAM:
"Maw Deeley"
She was supposedly a fortune teller, reading tea leaves
for wealthy Tupelo folks. They lived in a house on land that today is behind
uncle Elmer's house.
A story told by one of her children tells about Aunt Delia and Uncle Dee were on a highway construction job. Delia would serve as a cook since the workers had to live near the jobs and couldn't return home each day. Uncle Dee and the crew
were working one day on a roadbed while she was left in camp. Someone came up with the intentions of robbing her but she had a pistol and stopped the would-be robber. He wound up pleading with her to let him live and he promised he would
never do it again. She finally let him go.
