Kinetic Molecular Theory
- What are the three states of matter and explain their differences in terms of molecular forces only. The link below lists four states. Since plasma is nt found on Earth, just ignore in your answer.
- What are the three modes of molecular motion and describe each clearly?
How does temperature effect these modes of motion?
- Kinetic molecular theory is most useful for describing the characteristic properties of gases. How does the theory explain the properties of gases?
Start by listing the properties of a gas, then attempt the explination.
- Explain the difference between temperature and thermal energy.
How is temperature measured and what is a temperature scale?
Explain the Kelvin scale.
- Explain what gas pressure is. Do so in terms of molecular motion and molecular collisions.
How do moving gas molecules create or cause "pressure", where as liquids and solids do not create pressure?
Liquids can exibit pressure but it is either a function of gravity or else some other force is causing the so called pressure. for example, water pressure out of a tap is caused usually by a large pump pushing the water throught the pipes.
- What are the units for pressure?
- Gas pressure is effected by three factors:
- Surface area which the molecules strike
- Energy of the particles striking the surface
- The number of particles striking the surface per unit time.
Explain how each could increase the pressure, then how each could cause a drop in the pressure.
- Define what boiling point is in terms of pressure and explain why temperature is an inaccurate or even incorrect way to specify a boiling point.
