Thoth Gif borrowed from The Tomb of the Chihuahua Pharoahs
Section 4 LORE This is the part that most everybody puts up on their websites. As your cruise around you will see headings like Colours, Stones, Herbs and so forth and so on, usually followed by a list of properties or attributions, and they usually don't mention where they got their definitions of the properties from or what might be substituted for what. My first and last word on this subject is don't take anyones word on it...experiment and observe for yourself...if it seems correct to you then use it..if not throw it out...that includes my definitions of course :)
So what exactly is a correspondence? A correspondence is something that can be symbologically related to something else, in other words a symbol that can used to represent a force or idea or property magickally. A table of correspondences is then a list of things that can be used to represent the same concept or to represent another symbol that represents that concept. An example of a simple straightforward correspondence: Oh good grief, I hear you mutter, if that's the case then for any given symbol there good be hundreds of different variations as to what it means. Exactly...that's why I said experiment and observe for yourself...a symbol is only a good as it's meaning in your frame of reference. For instance Westerners wear black to funerals, but in the Orient white is worn. Two seemingly opposing symbol choices represent then same concept of mourning...which is correct? Both and neither. If as a Westerner you wear white to a funeral, even though you understand that this is the Oriental colour of mourning, the rest of the funeral party will think you outlandish or disrespectful because you are using a symbology foreign to your culture. So let's begin our journey into symbols and their meanings with the most personal of interpretations: colour. No two people have exactly the same emotional, mental, or even physiological reactions to colour. There are your favorite colours and colours you abhor. To one person red might be friendly and warm, to another the same shade is lurid and violent. The following are my personal views on colour, you may feel the same way or not, in which case decide for yourself what the colours mean and in your spells they will be the "correct" ones. RED~ energy, vitality, natural energy as opposed to spiritual energy, health, vigor, destruction, strife, anger, blood, masculine, virility, potency, fire BLUE~emotions, calm, tranquility, cool, water, empathy, feminine, passive, receptive, peaceful YELLOW~light, sunshine, energy, wealth, happiness, good fortune, children, youth, air GREEN~growth, healing, fertility, plants, nature, motherhood, earth, stagnation, envy ORANGE~learning, intellect, knowledge, speed, information, wisdom, harvest, culmination PURPLE~dreams, trances, psychic power, spiritual energy as opposed to natural energy, sleep BROWN~animals, earth, solidity, foundation, fertilizer WHITE~purity, reflection of forces, initiation, beginnings, birth, energy BLACK~purity, absorption of forces, endings, change, matter These are the basics, but as anyone can see there are many many more colours than just these so what do the "sub" colours mean. In my scheme, I mix the meanings together to form a more specific meaning for the subs: examples
BLUE-GREEN~ emotional healing and growth, empathy with nature Colours as symbols are used in candle magick, in visualizations and meditations, in clothing choices for ritual and everyday use, in home decoration. In nearly every facet of human life, we use colour symbology. These symbols go deep into our subconscious, often completely bypassing our conscious thought processes. For example, I am sure all of you have seen a room or a house painted a colour that you thought was hideous, and instantly you were ill at ease with the owner. Restuarants and supermarkets routinely use pink lighting to make things look more appealing and apetizing. Advertising agencies have long recognized the power of colours as symbols...just walk down any grocery isle and look at the colour choices in packaging. Do you feel more inclined to buy a laundry soap in a black package or a yellow one? Think about these things on a spiritual level, ask why and analyze your feelings. AS you do, write them down in your book of shadows and you will see your own colour chart begin to emerge. It may be similar to mine or completely different, but because you have defined these symbols in your own frame of reference they will be the correct attributions for you.
