Letters to Moonchild |
July 7 1998 Bright Blessings Moonchild, Knowing when or when not to cast a spell is very much a matter of prayer, meditation and soul-searching to examine your own motivations in wanting to cast a spell. MOST of the time you will be casting spells with the person's consent (healing, luck, divination and so forth). As to the binding of harmful spirits, you must remember that magick is your LAST resort. If you are trying to stop someone who is trying to cause you or your loved ones harm, use the most obvious and direct methods at hand first, call the cops, or the better business bureau, or write a letter to the person, or the editor of your local newspaper, get your shotgun and warn them off your property ( sorry hillbilly humor hehe) , whatever any non-witch would do if threatened with harm, then if you are still threatened do you bind them. Bindings are not ever intended to harm a person, merely to prevent him from harming you, and yes this may violate his free-will, but another person's exercise of individual free-will stops when it harms another person. In other words an evil-doers "space" stops where yours begins, and defending yourself does not violate the Rede or the Rule of Three. Animal Totems are not something I am very familiar with. There are some good shamanic sites on the web and you would probably do best to cruise around and look at some of these, using your "rightness detector". One that I would reccommend is Camlynn's page (it's on my links page) I know she has a good section on animal Totems (I believe hers is an owl). Poems inspired by the Goddess are what will become the basis of your own rituals and chants, and this is something that you would include in a Book of Shadows, and yes this has happened to me many times I have felt the presence of the Goddess and been inspired to poems, chants, music, paintings, and always these are some of my best work. This inspiration is one of the most wonderful Gifts from the Goddess. Your rabbit story reminded me of one of my favorite summer rituals ( one could do it in the winter, but I'm fairly sure you'd get sick). On a warm summer night, or afternoon, just before a thunderstorm, find yourself a patch of grass or woods and lay down flat on your back. Stretch out your arms and try to become one with the Earth, listen to the sounds, smell the scents, watch the clouds moving over you. Stay like that through the entire rainstorm ( but don't be silly if it rains more than a couple hours, come in :)), at first it will seem kind of odd, but the longer you stay the more in tune with nature you become, you feel what it is like to BE the Earth as Father Sky makes love to her. (Plan ahead too, have a towel and a mug of tea waiting for you when you come in. ) It is extraordinarily cleansing and in many ways just like really making love. Well good night to you daughter of the Moon, Goddess Guard and Guide, Firesilk
