Introduction to Hero Quest
Dark caverns. Gory monsters. Deadly traps...and worse! Once you enter the mysterious
underground world of Hero Quest, there's no turning back.
Hero Quest is a simple role playing game. The players assume the roles of Heros, and one player assumes the role of Zargon. Zargon runs the game. The Hero's are on a quest, and they have a goal to achieve. How they go about achieving that goal is entirely up to them. Zargon controls the monsters and traps that are placed on the gameboard. His goal is to destroy the Heros and prevent the fullfillment of their quest.
So what exactly is it?
Hero Quest is a very basic role playing game. This game is a great introduction to role playing games, as it is quite simple. There are only a few options. If you have heard of something called "Advanced Dungeons and Dragons" and have been curious about it, this would be a great game to start. You can learn the basics of combat, magic and searching in less than an hour. Game mechanics are straight-forward, lacking the complexity and detail of AD&D. The task of teaching yourself AD&D is quite daunting, with its massive rulebooks and supplements. This is not the case with Hero Quest. It has 1 small rule pamphlet, and an adventure book that contains the quests.
Quest? What's that?
A Quest is a gaming session. It is a mission that the Heros go on. There is a specific stated goal that must be achieved for the quest to be successfull. This can involve finding a lost treasure, recovering a lost artifact, or defeating a specific monster. Zargon has the quest map which details where everything can be found on the board. The Heros can only see something when they entire that area of the quest.
Sounds confusing. Is it really fun?
While at first it may seem confusing, it is surprisingly easy to learn. Within 2 quests, you'll have the basics down. Within 4 quests, you'll be questing like a veteran. The real fun in Hero Quest is that each quest is different. Even if you play the same quest twice, it could be a completely different experience. While the scope is somewhat limited, with some imaginative players, Hero Quest can provide hours of entertainment and fun.
Okay, Now that I've mastered Hero Quest, what's next?
If you enjoy Hero Quest, you will absolutely love Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. The scope of AD&D is limited only by your imagination. While it is difficult to learn on your own, experienced players are always willing to teach. With a little patience you can learn it. And then you are in for some great times. Have Fun!
