The Box Tree is a Precious Wood

Winifred Walker, in All the Plants of the Bible, mentions musical instruments made from box wood and notes that spoons and combs were made from it as well. She, along with Nelson and Smith in their dictionaries, tell us box wood has a very fine grain that is hard and very compact.

The box wood was a favorite bush for topiary work in Roman times, according to Walker. It is used in decorative gardens worldwide.

Box wood is native to the areas of Galilee and Lebanon and the general Mediterranean region. It will grow as high as twenty feet. The leaves are glossy, dark green.
