Chaff

Hebrew: mos

View blowing out the chaff and threshing instruments

The husks that surround the seeds of cereal grains are called chaff throughout the Bible. The Hebrew word is translated "winnowed." Chaff , after the threshing is over, is mingled with the cut and split straw (teben). Winnowing separates the product of threshing into four parts- grain, cut straw, chaff, and finally the dust, caused by the comminution of a part of the straw and chaff and its commingling with the dust of the earthen floor. This, which is translated in Hebrew as ur, is erroneously referred to as "chaff" (Daniel 2:35).
